So Alabama, how's that whole illegeal alien crackdown working out for you?

My grandfather was a rancher in Texas. And he tried many times to hire someone locally to cut cedar on his place. But it's nasty, dirty, backbreaking work and everyone he hired quit within a day or two. So yes, he used illegal aliens for chopping down cedar trees and other tough jobs that no US citizen was willing to do. The cedar choppers (and fruit pickers) knew to come to Texas during the spring (after hunting season) and would work to clear cedar (or pick produce) then return home to their families in Mexico when the seasonal work on the ranches and farms ran out for that year in the fall.

It was only when the government started tightening the border (in the 90's, IIRC) that they really started moving their entire families here en mass as we made it too hard for them to travel back and forth across the border for the seasonal work. Of course the continuing problems (poverty, drugs and violence) in Mexico also drove some families up north, but not nearly as many as the border crackdowns did.

but but but, US citizens will take these jobs if it paid a legal wage!!! At least that's what the resident conservatives said!

So the gist of the matter is that conservatives were wrong (as usual) when they argued that US citizens would take those agricultural jobs

BS. They didn't move their families here because it was too hard to come for seasonal work. They moved their families here because we became a liberal society between the early 1950s when harvest work was common and today. We allow them to use our emergency rooms without paying, we allow their kids to register in schools, we print government instructions in Spanish, and so on. In other words, they have moved their families here because we have made it comfortable to do so.

We also have said that the government safety net needs to be dismantled for almost everyone on it.

If you really UI is a better deal, I'm sure you can figure out how to get laid off.

I think the problem is that you have to develop the lacbor market from scratch. There was/is a highly developed illegal migrant labor market where you contact middle men and tell them how large the crop is and the window for harvest....so you can get the proper number of pickers their at the proper time. It will take time and effort to create an alternative legal system.

I bet there are plenty of people in Alabama, who are physical able to work, that take government assistance.
Cut off government money to those who refuse to take a job.

That would solve this, and a couple of other problems.
