What we're trying to get to the bottom of is if newspapers should simply be providing a megaphone for the chosen few to say things like, "My belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators" or if assertions like these need to be challenged. |

In the example of Romney claiming that Obama apologizes for America, whether or not Obama in fact apologizes for America or has ever apologized for America does not change the fact that Romney claims that Obama apologizes for America.
The New York Times (NYT) is a paper in distress, if what people said in the NYT CEO severance package thread is true. It is a nationally circulated paper, which means it must compete against every local rag in the country - at a disadvantage, since, other than for New Yorkers, the NYT does not provide local news coverage - and it must also compete against other nationally circulated papers like USA Today and the Wall Street Journal. The New York Times tries to do that by differentiating itself with a different slant from the others. But the other example given, of concluding alongside a reader that Clarence Thomas knowingly withheld some information rather than misunderstood a procedure, is worrisome. Unless the NYT has staff with psychic powers able to directly read Thomas's thoughts, how can it make a judgment like that? I would certainly think that, if you should make the news for whatever reason, you would not want news articles casting judgments on you in that manner, and, if you are a NYT supporter, you should be able to see how such rushes to judgment can endanger the paper itself by opening it up to lawsuits. |

I read the local and state news on my local newspaper's website for two reasons. 1. It's a SD (free). 2. The articles contain a brief synopsis of what occurred. Just the details without any embellishment. If I want to read further or find more information, then Google is my friend. The reporter's and newspaper's bias is greatly reduced. I don't care what any leftist biased news organization or reporter thinks about an issue. |

As for Romney, I have trouble with the articles in newspapers and media that are essentially, "Politician's lips move, and words come out. Here is what was said." and then there is nothing else other than what is essentially a PR release of a candidates opinion. In the case of Romney saying Obama apologizes for America, I think the article should focus on if what Romney is saying is true. If it's not true, highlight that, and if it is true, highlight the time Obama did what Romney accused him of doing.

excerpt...
The polls were not skewed, biased, oversampled or wrong. I was. There was no wave, no landslide, I was wrong about that too. Nate Silver is the gold standard of polling analysis.

Just wondering if conservatives live in the real world?
Is Global Climate Change an example of liberal bias? What about Evolution with the big E? The fact the oil is a global commodity, and that drilling for more wouldn't put a dent in the US oil demand? I'm sure there are a million other examples...seems like anything conservatives don't agree in that is actually grounded in truth is singled out as having liberal bias. So, to answer the OP, Yes, I think the Times should start moving towards what I described above. Click here to feed a hungry animal! [theanimalrescuesite.com]
It is well enough that the people of this nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning. -Henry Ford |

If you are a reporter and all you accomplish is transcribing what someone more important than you says, what's the point? Why not let that persons PR people write he story directly? |
