Thread Details

Hey guys, usually I don't post on here, so I am a newbie. I go to the LA Fitness on Lake Success, NY. It is one of their 'Elite' locations.

I originally signed up for $100 down and $40 a month (2 other people joined with me and we all split the $100 initiation fee).

I recently told them that I am canceling 'for financial reasons'. Mainly because I was hoping they would send me a better deal or an offer. And because one way or another, they try to get money from you constantly. I have to keep a close tab on my bank statements because they have these random fees for some reason that they usually don't even inform you about.

Anyways, after I sent in a notice to cancel my membership 'for financial reasons', after a few days, I got this email:

LA Fitness is making it easy to come back to our club and stay in shape!

******* (NAME) ******, we know that times like these can cause some to sacrifice their fitness goals for financial reasons. If you've had to face this choice, we'd like to help if we can. Because you've been a loyal supporter of LA Fitness in the past, we're extending this opportunity for you to get back on a regular fitness program with us. This offer is being extended to former members in good standing.

This offer is available online only through this link.

Join Now

Restart your membership today for $0 initiation fee and only $29.99 per month for multi-club access. First and last months' dues required at the time of enrollment.*

This offer is good only for the person named in this email and is non- transferable. This offer can only be activated online, so click on the button above to start the process. It's quick and easy. We hope to see you back in the club soon!
I think that sounds pretty good to me. I may end up 'restarting' my membership with this new offer.

If you already have a membership at an LA Fitness, try canceling it and see if you get an offer like this. You may also try and talk to someone there and mention that you are thinking about leaving because of financial reason, they may negotiate with you and 'restart' your membership.

Again, I don't know if this would work for everyone. But worth a shot. Usually, people are paying $50+ a month, this can save you over $20 each month. GOOD LUCK!

Pretty good...I get a corporate rate through my company so I pay $29.99 a month for nationwide access but that doesn't include their "signature" locations.

I don't know about 'elite' locations and what additional services are included but I've had a multi-club access for this price for years. Cancelled a couple of times for financial reasons, reactivated later. For me it has been $29.99 for as long I can remember. Have never seen a better rate.

i paid in full.. 3 years for $699. and now my renewal is $199 for every 13 months. Comes out to a little over $15 a month. Smilie

for those that are not committed to 3 years.. if you quit they'll give you a prorated refund. valid for multi club use.

Yeah, I have heard that the Elite clubs are usually left out of their cheap membership plans. A lot of time, you would be able to get that price ($29.99) at an Elite location, however, it would be a single club membership. Which isn't bad at all either, unless you travel a lot.

But def. worth a try, especially if you don't go to an Elite LA Fitness location. I remember I went there to join up few months back and the guy talking to me about their memberships was really stingy. He offered me $50 initiation fee with $50 a month. Then I told him that I can get a better deal at my local gym, of course, they didn't have a basketball court, pool, or a hot tub.. but regardless, I told him I just need weights.. machines, and cardio machines. But after I told him how I can get a better rate at a local gym, he goes, well.. the local gym doesn't have 100 cardio machines and all this equipment. And I kindda got mad after that and clearly told him, I am not going to be on 100 machines at the same time.. so what good is that to me.. personally? So I left, and called in instead and spoke to someone and he gave me a better deal. Before leaving, I told him, I was going to bring in 3 additional people to join with me, but he still wouldn't go down on price.

Its all about negotiation at LA Fitness.

I used to go to that same LAF in Lake success and used to pay $50/month. A month after I left, I got an email asking to come back for 50/month, no initiation, and I could bring 2 guests for 6 months. I didnt take the offer because I found a way better gym for the same price, but I am not willing to share in fear of it turning into a dump like LA Fitness did lol. Have fun looking for weights on the floor and waiting for people to finish their phone calls while they are sitting on the benches.

30 is a great price for that facility though, too bad the staff and members treat it like a dump. $1 a day is awesome.

That is very true. The only thing I really joined LA Fitness was for the basketball courts. But unless I go at 1AM or 2 AM.. I probably won't be able to shoot around like I want to. That also depends on which LA Fitness.. The Lake Success one does suck. Weights are all over the place and mixed. I have to wait for people to finish.. and of course, basketball courts are ALWAYS packed and full court games are going on.. I would actually be better off just going to my local gym.

Our closest was a Signature and was $199 initiation + $39.99/mth, so that's what we got.

I've been to 3 separate ones (Signature members can use any location) cause of travel, including 2 Signature clubs, and they're all similar. It's dumb to exclude paying members IMO. Some are just newer than others.

So did you actually mail the form in the mail in or just do the thing online? I just did the cancellation request online but I don't know if I should actually mail it in or not. I don't really wanna cancel but wouldn't mind a little better price.

I think it really depends, I went there twice, once for the tour. They try to sign me up back then, but it was too expensive. ( I mentioned about my company, and they say they have a plan waive the initation fee, but still like 40 a month) I said no to that plan.

Then later in winter, it got too cold to run outside and I need to loose weight. =) So I did a little research, their price are everywhere, at least in my area. Some people even pay 20 bucks a month. They say the trick is to go in near the end of the month and ask for a lower rate.

So I went in the next day, mentioned about my company and I think the sales person played with me a little bit. But I stayed firm and veto all the expensive plans. (One thing tho, I kept referencing that my friend got a lower rate, so try to get him match to that plan) In the end, I got 0 initation fee (due to my company) and 25 per month (due to donating blood and everything)
