Thread Details

Anyone use this to generate points on their credit cards? If you purchase something with a credit card at sams or walmart you can get cash back up to about 120 or 150. Each time i go to the walmart I max it out generating myself some airline miles.

Don't you need to use a pin to get cash back? Then you get charged for a cash advance and you don't get points on your card ... I don't think this actually works ...

If you want to generate points then you can send money to family or friends using your Discover Card via PayPal. I'm not sure if it's available to all Discover Card members, but you can read this article: LINK [wordpress.com]

or this thread on SD: HERE

There is no pin required. Walmart bills it as if its part of your purchase. Go to walmart and buy a stick of gum with your credit card and it will give you the option at checkout.

...I don't think it's every credit card. I know Discover used to let you do it (and maybe still do), but I haven't seen that option anywhere in a while besides at Safeway stores.

Yeah OP..what card do you have? I have purchased stuff at Walmart before with CREDIT (Chase Freedom) and have NEVER been giving this option.

I think this is only Discover only (all Discover cards I'm assuming since Discover issues Walmart's credit cards).

From http://www.walmart.com/cp/Credit-Cards/632402

3 Get up to $100 quick cash in $20 increments when you make a purchase with your Walmart Discover card or $60 quick cash in $20 increments when you make a purchase with your Walmart Credit Card at Walmart-owned registers in Walmart stores. Limit one per day. This cash advance will appear on your monthly billing statement like a purchase. Subject to credit approval.

Actually here's a full list from Discover

hmmm I've always thought such things went through as a cash advance = best case no points, worst case = finance charge.

discover does have their paypal option, which does explicitly include cash back, but is limited to $200/day and $500/mo (at least my cards are, perhaps ymmv).

amazon payments is another option, unlimited sending afaik. I've used it to meet purchase requirements for rewards but at 1%, you'd need to move a LOT of $$ through it for cash back to amount to anything. By then you'd be raising flags @ amazon hq.

At grocery stores, Discover doesn't give rewards for the cash over amount (on your statement it'll show separate amounts for the purchase & cash over). I think they previously gave rewards for the whole amount, but changed it.

But someone a couple years ago said that at Walmart, the whole amount was still treated as a purchase, so you'd get rewards on the whole amount; but someone claimed that Discover only gives 0.25% rewards at Walmart. You could probably call Discover and ask for the current details.

Discover was in kahoots with WM/Sams back when they (WM) had issues with Visa/MC, and even now the Sam's CC is actually Discover-branded, so perhaps they still treat Discover differently.

What card does the OP have? Never in my entire experience of using credit cards have I ever been offered the option for cashback on a credit card purchase.

For all the naysayers, I've done it before but it shows up as two separate transactions on your statement. They know which is the cash back.

Do you get rewards on it, I don't know, but I doubt it.
