Major Update: It's been a while but there are some major upgrades with the TVpad, as well as changes to the benefits of the coupon code 15819288. Specifically, the TVpad 2 is now out with firmware update 3.70. The major upgrades are:

1. Join hands with WASU to provide massive genuine videos.
2. Equipped with a new smart CPU as well as high 3D graphics performance.
3. Can be used as game console to play motion sensing games.
4. Build-in VOIP, make free calls worldwide.
5. Build-in WiFi, easy to connect to home network wirelessly.
6. Better hardware so with shorter boot time and response much faster and play video more smooth than M121S.

(sourced from http://tvpadzone.com/english/intro/model.html)

The price of a TVpad2 is $259.

In the past, the coupon code 15819288 gives $30 off. Now for the better or the worse, it will instead give a gift pack worth $88 dollars with dozens of new apps for the TVpad2. Here is an access to the coupon details [tvpadzone.com]

Personally I prefer the $30 off, but seeing how Roku's top version (XD or XS?) is a $30 jump due to the motion sensor, I thought it was fair.

That said, make sure to read the buyer's notice before making the purchase, to be aware of compatibilities and scams:

PM me if you have any questions and I will answer based on what I know (I own 4 TVpads). All sources acquired from TVPadzone.

Edit: code 15819288 will now work until 06/30/2014

For Chinese users, TVPad is a new device that allow you to watch Hong Kong/Mainland channels live without any monthly subscription. I bought it myself approximately 4 months ago and am extremely satisfied with it.

In a new 2012 promotion, the originally price has been cut from $299 to $229. You can use the promotional code 15819288 at checkout of the official site to take off an extra $30.

This is their official website (it's in Chinese): http://www.tvpad.hk/tvpad/01/

Just thought I should share a very useful product that isn't very well known yet. Smilie

EDIT 02/06/12

Wow, I am absolutely fascinated and pleasantly surprised at the large amount of interest my fellow SDers have on the topic. I made this post during Chinese New Year and it has escaped my mind since then, and coming back to it, there was a lot of excellent reads.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the thread and it was definitely an eye-opener. In terms of the TVPad, there are definitely pros and cons depending on the type of user you are. Here are my two cents:

If you watch your TV shows and movies frequently on your computer, then the TVPad is not for you. There are more options out there (as greatly mentioned in the wikiboard) which are obviously more cost effective and might have more flexibility in terms of functions.

TVPad's main advantages I think is its convenience. I know many of my friends (myself included) prefer to watch things on the actual television unit after spending the whole day on my computer at work already. TVPad provides that genuine feeling I used to get when I used to live in HK. Compared to an old Chinese cable package I used to get, TVPad was a huge upgrade. I think it makes a good present for parents who are less tech-savvy or more old-school.

In terms of its reliability, there are plenty of reviews out there that I think people interested might find useful. If you can read Chinese, TVPad's forum is actually remarkably active with a lot of tech support. (tvpad.hk) I know there are concerns in regards to how long TVB/ATV channels will last; I personally think it is worth the investment because of its nonobligatory nature with no monthly subscriptions. I have been using it for about 4 months and don't have too many complaints as of now.

That said, I have tried some methods mentioned and they are very excellent alternatives as well. Of all options on the list, I was especially impressed by Sopcast.

Thank you for all the wonderful responses. Hope this thread help everyone one way or another, whether it's the product or the streaming methods provided here. Feel free to PM me if you have questions about my experience with the TVPad.

百合电视 is no longer working and has been down for almost a month.
There seems to be quite a bit of confusion to what 百合電視 is-- it is one of the Apps that give access to HK channels such as TVB and ATV. 粵海TV is another option and is working just fine and I can still watch these HK channels fine. Just thought this needed some clarifications.

SopCast has the option to "Use [your] own player". I use VLC to change the aspect ratio (don't think the default player can do it). Run SopCast manually, then go to Option and browse to where vlc.exe is located. You can also set VLC preference for "Source aspect ratio" to 16:9 to keep the setting when changing channels.
Alternative, use the same trick as with BeTV. While Sopcast is playing the live stream, open VLC and go to Media and Open Network Stream. Type in 127.0.0.1:8902/tv.mpeg. Then you can see the video on VLC and you can change aspect ratio or make it full screen. Next time you just need to press Ctl-1 (short cut to last play) in VLC without going through the menu input. Make sure you mute the Sopcast windows otherwise you will hear 2 unsynchronized sound.

Dumpav,

In the blog Max mentioned you must have Multimedia On Demand installed to work? Isn't that another streaming device? Sorry, I can't read Chinese very well even with Google Translate it's a little confusing.

Thanks.

Go back and read the whole thread. I have already posted it. See #156 and earlier.
Here is the link to instruction.
Where do you put tvchannel.xml? In my install, there's no tvchannel.xml to be found, and BETV appears to be getting the channel list from http://channel.sopserv.com/chlist.xml. Thanks in advance for the help.

I put it in the BeTV folder and it works for me on my laptop running Win7 32-bit. On my HTPC running Win7 64-bit, I need to replace the tvchannel file every time and then click the update button (the update will fail anyway) before it reads from the tvchannel file. It is not clear to me what causes the difference. I even tried copying the whole BeTV folder from my laptop to the HTPC and it still behaves the same. Interestingly, when the channel list reverted to default, the tvchannel file some times still have the same size and date (some times not). So there may be a way to load the tv channel list from other source as you said, and that may be set in the registry.

That tells you TVB is addictive and is hard to get for free as well. The direct TV crap is in non-HD and charge you $30 a month. TVB is a rip off in US.
Not to mention the crappy Chinese medicine commercial they play over and over again, and the stupid US host I can't stand him.

I think the HK VPN is the best solution.

I couldn't get BETV to show the TVB channels. Followed the procedure in that link, and tried it on multiple machines, running windows 7 and XP. For some reason, the tvchannel.xml file was not honored by BETV. I have run different versions of BETV's too.

Another interesting thing is that once I copied that tvchannel.xml file into the BETV directory, and before I ran the program, when I looked at that file using an xml editor, the contents have changed: TVB channels were no longer listed. However, if I open the tvchannel.xml file with a plain text editor, the file is the same as the original one, with TVB channels there. So the file is not actually modified, but for some strange reason, using an xml editor gives a different view than using a plain text editor.

Has anyone else besides Bill make it work successfully and see TVB channels? OTOH, I am happy that sopcast works!

I was able to get BETV to work by following this method posted here:
http://www.popularasians.com/foru...post980872

Subsequently, I then used the tvchannel.xml that was posted earlier although the one from popularasians might work too and it has more entries.

I tried this on my laptop running running windows7 (32bit).

As an aside, is there any quality difference between sopcast and betv?

Thanks for the link. Where did you download HDPlayer-3.3.2.exe., and why is it necessary?

The HDPlayer is contained within the BETV.rar file. I just ran it once to install it and then ran betv.exe to start the player.

Thanks, I finally got it to work. I copies the tvchannel.xml file over, and it still did not see the correct list. Then I clicked update in BETV, refused the subsequent update, and then the TVB HD channel appeared.

Yes, it finally did, using the customized version of the betv program (no installation needed).

Anyone looking for any movies/shows in Chinese, look up PPS. It has TONS of shows, movies, news, almost anything from China and Taiwan. I made a dedicated PPS machine for my mom, and she hasn't left her room in over a year...lol.

Seriously though, PPS is great because it has all these Chinese shows, as well as Korean dramas with Chinese subs, American movies in Chinese subs, etc....and its free.

As far as the legality of it...come on...its made in China.

http://www.pps.tv/
Its a pretty straight forward install, but it does pop out a bunch of useless adverts from time to time. Some AV's might tag it as malicious, but it's not really. Just annoying popups. Personally, I can't stand these Chinese adware things which is why I put together a cheapy computer just to run this for my mom.
PPS adware destroyed one computer to the point that i had to completely reformat it. it's starting to die again, so i might have to keep my mom from installing pps again.
