USAA offers some of the best rates and perks on car rentals in my opinion. Especially for drivers who are 18 to 24, typically saves $25 to $30 per day. I have only used the Hertz discount and it's saved me a lot of money.

This might be YMMV for some as technically you are required to show proof of your USAA membership (debit card) upon getting the car. Just open a USAA Free Checking account (takes about 10 mins) and you are good to go.

Recently did a quote for a 3 month rental from the Denver Airport (going for an internship and am under 24) and they quoted me almost $3600 and with the USAA discount it dropped to $1800!

Have also gotten weekly rentals in Atlanta for about $119 to $125 a week for a full size.

Opening a Checking account is NOT necessary.

Call USAA - 1-800-531-8722 and ask them to create a membership number.
That's it. Register on the website. A print out of the Profile Page-with your name, address and membership number is ample proof for the rental agency.

Also- One needs to use one of their MAJOR products (such as insurance, investments etc) to be eligible for the Primary Liability Coverage. [pening a free checking account will NOT make you eligible for the Primary Liability Coverage. I have called and verified this.

Having a membership number will only let you use the discount code. that's it.

Calling to verify means nothing. Theres is nothing in the terms and conditions of the rental agreement that says you need to be use a MAJOR product to get the car rental insurance. The insurance is provided through the rental company (I only checked Avis.) see this link http://www.avis.com/car-rental/ht...a/faq.html (if link doesn't work, log into you usaa account go the car rental section and click on "learn about member benefits" )
CSR on the phone might confuse their real car rental insurance, vs the car rental insurance as part of the rental agreement.

Budget, Avis, and Enterprise only waive the underage fee for 21-24 year olds with USAA membership. Hertz is the only car rental company that waives the underage fee for 18-24 year olds.

I rented last summer but usaa could not beat the random deal I found on line. Good discount, but make sure you look around first.

x2 USAA is on par with online travel agents for car rentals.

You may want to check that latter statement. I'm fairly certain that USAA changed their banking requirements a few years ago.

Hm. I signed up without being affiliated with any agency and I am only allowed access to Checking/Savings/Credit cards.

Found this online

Auto and property insurance and some banking services require that the customer meet membership eligibility criteria. USAA investment products as well as deposit-only banking services are available to non-members.

Auto and property insurance are the products with eligibility requirements. From USAA's site:

Quote :
USAA's investment products, most checking and savings products, credit cards, life insurance, and shopping and discounts are available to other individuals.

USAA auto and property insurance is not available due to membership eligibility requirements. New Hampshire and North Carolina residents who are not eligible for membership may be able to obtain USAA auto insurance by calling 1-800-531-USAA (8722) to determine eligibility as defined by these state's mandatory coverage laws.

All other individuals not eligible for USAA auto insurance may be able to obtain an auto policy through Progressive Insurance by calling 1-888-870-8096.

So, you have to show a debit card to get the rental car discounts? Is a USAA Membership card not enough?

ps... usaa ftw!

I use USAA for rentals when I don't have time to find a good deal online. The extra coverage is really the biggest reason to use them. It's foolish to say that they have the best deal around. Often the rates are very similar to the regular company sites I use Avis and can speak from experience.

I've never needed to show my card at the rental agency. You can get a decent deal if you find a coupon to couple with the membership discount

Just a note, I believe Hertz is the only one on the list that allows rental under 21 (18-20). I've been using this program for the past 2 years, the only issue I have ever encountered is at San Diego airport, where they wanted to see proof (and the debit card worked as proof).

Also: hertz has free gold membership (normally $60) with usaa, which can come with some good benefits, https://offer.hertz.com/offers/index.jsp?targetPage=usaa_vanity_url.jsp

No problem. I realize that everyone doesn't think it's a great deal. There might be other offers out that for people that are within the rental age limits but for me, this has been an extremely great deal! Saving up to $30 per day is a lot of cash!

I use the CDP fairly often but it usually does not allow PC coupons to also be used.
