Thread Details

I'm running through Turbotax and they're asking me how much I spent on out of state purchases which were untaxed. I assume they mean Amazon, Newegg, and other online retailers which don't charge me state sales tax. I'm really not sure how much I've spent. It could be as much as $3000 or as little as $1000 since I really don't keep up with this. I know here on Slickdeals people constantly say "Sales tax spoils this". Am I missing something?

What's to keep someone from just saying $0? The honor system?

Technically it's still a spelling error. I think we can safely assume that the poster meant 'except' but thought 'except' was spelled 'accept'.

As for the tax question, the only thing stopping you from lying is the chance of getting audited and somehow letting the government prove that you bought things out of state and did not pay sales tax. Which won't happen. It's illegal to lie on your taxes, but that's a choice you and your conscience get to live with.

That's what I'm saying - businesses can be hit, but they aren't hitting individuals up. Come at me IRS.
Sorry, companies as in they get Amazon's shipping records and see that you received 100 packages then they go after you...

There is no federal income tax, so the IRS doesn't care what you claim. Turbo tax is asking this info for your state income tax, so if you got an audit, it would be your states department of taxation.
doubtful state would audit you for a few hundred at most. worse case scenario will be a delinquency bill + late payment charges + interest, etc
