I saw that too but I'm really hoping for $100 or less (which is why I was more interested in this deal at first). I missed on the $100 PNY 460 that made front page because I wasn't shopping for a card at the time. Also, $120 for a 6850 seems pretty commonplace these days which is another reason why I am wanting to wait for $100 or less. maybe I'll stumble upon a deal soon enough but no big rush. still waiting to sell my 4830 as well
I'm trying to decide how much this would be an upgrade. it's a few tiers above my current 4830 but I'm wondering how much the 192-bit will effect me when my old card is 256-bit
As handy a tool as Tom's hierarchy chart is, as i've said before its meant to be a quick and simple guideline not as a hard and definitive reference. Rather than go strictly by tiers to gauge performance, check real world benchmarks. For instance here is a good set of benches [anandtech.com] (check the entire articles) which shows the 550 Ti generally beating a 4870. While there is no 4830 on the list, the fact that it performs on par or better than a 4870 gives you a real world idea of its performance level. Another look at benches [tomshardware.com] shows its performance about equal to a 5770. Again no 4830, but transitively the 5770/6770 performs[anandtech.com] on par (or slightly higher) with a 4870. Finally if you look at these numbers[legitreviews.com] you can see that the 4870 is around 25%-50% faster than a 4830. Again please read the entire articles for the full picture, but you would be looking at a likely 30-50% gain depending on the exact title from a 550 Ti.
Beyond the raw performance numbers, a 550 Ti will also give you DX11, lower power consumption, CUDA, and 3D Vision. Whether that is worth $90 is only a call yo ucan make. As mentioned in a previous post, if you could expand your budget up to $120 you could look at a 6850 which would give you an across the board performance gain of 50% and greater. But for this price the 550 Ti is a solid performer, and if you are inclined to overclock [tomshardware.com]you can gain an additional 5-10% in performance.
