Here are all the other ways I found to maximize free Dropbox storage space. I've tested all these personally. Let me know if there are others. I'm open to PMs, thanks.
1) Get referred by a current user - 2.25GB otherwise 2GB if you are not referred 2) Complete at least 5 of 7 easy getting started tutorial steps - 250MB https://www.dropbox.com/gs 3) Complete these simple tasks https://www.dropbox.com/free - Connect your Twitter account with Dropbox - 128MB - Connect your Facebook account with Dropbox - 128MB - Follow @Dropbox on Twitter - 128MB - Send a one line comment about why you love Dropbox - 128MB - Tweet about Dropbox for more free space! - 128MB 4) Refer new users who register AND install the Dropbox desktop client - 250MB per referral up to 8GB 5) Link your account to a .edu email address - doubles storage referral bonus (retroactively as well) to 500MB per referral up to 16GB https://www.dropbox.com/edu |

Cool deal. I can't imagine they'll turn around and take away space from people contributing to the testing, but I suppose anything is possible.
Have added enough to earn an additional 3.5GB so far, so expect I'll have the full 4.5GB shortly. Regarding comments on .edu accounts, can you get the same benefits by switching an existing account over? I have a .edu email account, but didn't realize the benefits at the time and used a different non-edu account. |

AFAIK, the box will only allow file not bigger than either 150MB or 200MB (I forgot the size cause I have not uploaded to box for quite some time). I am not sure for dropbox, but I just uploaded a single 500MB file to it and it accepted it. |

I tried but couldn't get my Dropbox to expand with this method even after installing the new software. Then I found SugarSync which has a desktop client, has sharable desktop folders (like Dropbox), and has a mac menubar icon.
Oh yeah, and they give you 5 gb free anyway without all the hoops. https://www.sugarsync.com/free/ I don't work for them or anything; I just think it's pretty much the same without the hassle of uploading 5 gb of pics/videos. |
