dropbox can tell that files are the same even if they are renamed.
so just copying the same photo files over and over again to fill up a mem card is not gonna work.
just take some video files and rename the extension to .jpg
then put those on a mem card and run the autoplay. click the dropbox import button in the autoplay and WAIT while it processes (meaning it copies to ur dropbox folder on your computer) and then it will automatically upload to dropbox.
you will not get any extra space until the files upload, so while you will get the first 500mb after the first file is finished uploading you will have to wait for the rest of the files to be uploaded and in each 500mb increment u will get another 500mb.
also, when i uploaded the last 500mb they gave me another 1GB and not just the 500mb
so in total i got 5GB and not the 4.5GB limit they said
i'm now uploading another 500mb to see if there really is a limit
i love my 100Mbit/sec university connection!
I just finished getting my 5gb, now I'm at 24.4gb after my referrals (doubled for being in college). Thanks OP!
If you have a slow upload, copy files that are already in your dropbox folder to a flash drive, and connect that up. They upload practically instantly (since dropbox recognizes them), and you still get the free space.

Reason: Automerged Doublepost
Absolutely, it's retroactive. Just log in to DropBox, then go here: www.dropbox.com/edu and link your .edu.
Your referral bonuses will instantly double.
Wow! I had no idea Dropbox let's you link existing accounts---or that the referral bonus can be applied retroactively to your past referrals too! Thanks so much for that tip and link! Amazing!! Just gained a few gigs of more storage.
The main drawback of the free sugarsync account seems to be that they only allow syncing between 2 computers. This is probably fine for most people, but I know some probably have 3 or more computers.
I tried but couldn't get my Dropbox to expand with this method even after installing the new software. Then I found SugarSync which has a desktop client, has sharable desktop folders (like Dropbox), and has a mac menubar icon.
fail..... i already have this.... thumbs down for not clearing in original post... thought it was something new
This was not posted in the forum build changelog until 1.3.12 which was released on 2/1. If you have this, you've been running it since all if yesterday, which is great for you, but hardly TD for the fact that the OP coudn't read your mind and find out that you had it a day before the rest of us.
In theory dropbox should compress the files it transfers pretty well, so if you were to upload a large number of files that were all one repeated character, but were named to look like images, you might be able to store a large amount of data without tying up your data transfer for hours
