To answer someone else's question, yes, freetaxusa.com will allow ANY federal return for free- i filed a 1040A with itemized deductions, & also had a schedule C in there too, among some other random forms. ***** EDIT ***** Upon further investigation, THIS LINK [hrblock.com] for H&R Block's ONLINE software claims that there "is no charge for NY state eFile". I assume it should be the same for the PC software(though it doesn't explicitly say so in their other link). Has anyone in NY tried this yet to confirm eFiling with it is free? For those using H&R Home deluxe, there appears to be bug in the software in form 8863. My wife & son both were full time student last year but it included only my son in this form. Last year correctly included both [i used H&R also, same settings]. I have informed them. Hopefully they will correct shortly.
Be careful. |

I hate BB as much as the next guy, but generally speaking the prices of movies, music, and video games are the same regardless of retailer. You could always just turn around and buy a $15 iTunes gift card, or give the $15 GC as a gift....hint, Valentine's Day is around the corner! The gift card cannot be used on this purchase, so that money is spent and must be used at Best Buy for another purchase. Why do you subtract it in your math like it is money directly off of this purchase? This deal is $20+tax with a giftcard that can be used for another purchase, where you will probably end up spending more money to use. Thumbs down. |

For this very reason, I always do my taxes both in taxact and H and r block to compare the returns. the one that gives me more returns, wins. Once I remember using H and R block and tacact. Taxact said I owe $ 120 to the state, whereas H and R block said I owe >$1000. I used the same sets of W-2's on both the softwares. So always use more than one tax softwares and choose the best. For instance, the background info on H&R defaults to you being married filing jointly even if you don't have two names on the return. If you do the whole interview, it presumably will correct this, but I never do the interview, I just fill out the forms I need. When doing a relative's return, the refund was huge and I was trying to figure out why and discovered that this single person was getting MFJ rates and deductions when I forgot to change status. Something like this could account for the difference. If the one where you owed $120 was due to this type of mistake, you could go ahead and file it, but if it's caught, you will owe interest and penalties. And, if there is only one name on the form, it will be caught. Another example is that H&R does not transfer the amount of property tax paid from the Schedule A on federal to the NJ return which gives you a deduction for up to $10k of NJ prop tax. If you don't pay attention, you'll miss this and end up losing a good deduction. Taxact may pick it up automatically, but it could also be wrong. If you own a vacation home in another state, the figure from the federal return may not be accurate. So, don't just go with the one that looks best. If you get different results, figure out why. H&R guarantees best refund so they do tend to be accurate. Users however may not be. Have any good expired mqs? My CVS will take coupons up to a month expired so PLMK what you have before you toss them.

If I remember correctly I think the difference was the SDI payment for the state. H/R block missed to consider it. But taxact took it correctly because i already paid the SDI (state disability insurance). the next year when i compared both h/r block and taxact considered it equally and the results were the same. that confirms h/r block missed to consider it that year. |

Kind of dead with the thread, but since this deal is still going on (through the week), I thought I'd drop in my experience. So I went to Best Buy yesterday and they weren't going to let me use both. They said something about not being able to redeem the coupon (issued by H & R Block) themselves since they were offering a promotion. I honestly don't understand any of the reasons they were trying to give. I asked why would Best Buy run two separate promotions if they weren't willing to let people use both? (So after a bit of pushing, I finally got them to do it.) But really, I'm a bit lost on this if it hadn't gone through.
