It's not a bad idea FOR YOU, but as part of this community it IS a bad idea for the other sder(s) who are local to that store that is 50-100 miles from you.
If you call and don't get the deal you just shrug it off as no big deal because you didn't have to waste gas driving 50-100 miles but make no mistake, when you called you definately alerted the employee who answered the phone and if he didn't get the deal for himself (can't afford it, etc, etc) then he/she CERTAINLY altered the other employees or even their outside friends (cell phone call in the back room).
What that means is that you didn't get the deal but those other sder's who live near that store but didn't have time to drop by locally didn't get the deal either and that's why it's a bad idea.
it's not always just about YOU getting the deal, it's about at least allowing any sder to get the deal as opposed to an employee because employees have an advantage over us therefore we need to not give them any more ammo than they already have.
I hate to say it, but it's true, is that it's us (sder's) vs. them (the employees).
You just gotta trust me on this one because I've seen it right before my eyes so many times I stopped counting.
I don't really chase deals down anymore (kind of pointless in NJ, too many deal hounds here) but I'm in country-bumpkin PA this week. Figured with all the Staples clearances why not try to hunt some down.. well, one store (Villanova PA) has an open box of this laptop. When I asked for it, they said it was an open box and needs to be scanned, tested, and reimaged. I said I don't mind, just sell it to me, worst case I'll use the warranty. They then told me I needed to talk to a manager, because they're not approved to sell it otherwise.
Well, I called and spoke to a manager (or as he put it, the "technology lead.") He wouldn't take the item #, but only wanted the model. After I gave it to him he said they couldn't sell it until it was on final clearance, the demo needs to be out there running. I said it already was on clearance, and wasn't even on display - I was there yesterday. He then changed the story to say they didn't have one to sell, because it was on clearance. Whatever that means.
Another store I visited for the 3TB clearance harddrives said they had two in stock. The clerk told a manager, who went into the back for 5 minutes and came back only to told me they didn't have any to sell, that they were clearanced and sold. Today, when I checked their inventory dropped from 2 to 0. Gee, wonder why.
Long story (sorry ADD folks!), and for those that stuck around the moral of the story is: it doesn't matter if you call or not, in my opinion. These employees/managers always disappear into the back for a while, only to come back and tell you their inventory is way off and they have none in stock. It's a retail employee's dilemma; crappy, crappy job but it has its perks.
I tried the Alexandria va store zip 22306.They only had one broken one in stock (i tested it to make sure Customer Service rep checked the computer and said there may be on in Rockville, MD. Hopefully one of my fellow SDer can get some use out of that knowledge.
Do you have investment homes?PM me with book or website recommendations. I am trying to buy 1 or 2 in the next 12 months
Aaaargh, I went to 3 different Staples that showed "Low Stock Clearance Item" and all 3 "did not have it" : \ I guess I got lucky when I got in on the dm4 deal
I bought a returned laptop that has the hard drive predictfailure flag set. The tech at the Staples where I bought it said that this was a common problem of these HP laptops. I intend to return it to HP to get a new drive. Pretty much every store that has only 1 probably has it in the damage area and is returning it to HP for credit. Most managers will not sell it, but the manager at my store did not mind. He thought I was crazy until he saw the coupon and the rebate brought the price down to 240. I am typing on it now, and I love the full size screen and keyboard. I am reclining on my ez chair and using it without a laptop pad for now. It does not seem to be getting too hot yet.
