Print from ipad to usb printer without pc or wifi network?

bowlerkid 32 February 8, 2012 at 01:52 PM
I am trying to help a friend.

We have
1x ipad (original) uses 3g
1x Printer usb

No computers
No wifi (3g is used by ipad)

Would it be possible to hook the printer up to the ipad in some way?
(whether through a wifi router network without an internet connection or otherwise?)

I can print to networked printers on my android so I'd have to believe it's available for ios too.

Yes there is easily, but hes wanting to do it without a network or any computer, meaning only plugging in his usb only printer into the non existent usb port on the ipad.

Unless the ipad supports USB OTG or USB host mode, I don't see it happening. A wireless option would be your best bet.

When you say 3g only, do you mean you cant connect to a wireless router? you may be able to set up some kind of external remote into the home network solution. That would be rather complex just to print though.

The short answer is "you don't".

The long answer is "The iPad does not support USB, so no printing without help. Your only real choice is to get a wireless router that supports USB printing and hook the printer to it, then connect the iPad to it wirelessly."

Even then it has to be one of the supported printers: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356

Macworld has a detailed article [macworld.com]about it. But there's no way to do it by attaching the iPad to the printer via USB, so without additional hardware, the answer is "no."

Either you need an AirPrint-enabled printer + WiFi router, or you need a Mac + WiFi router + extra software.

A pc would work too (with wifi router + software).

They don't work with iOS devices. They work with "dumb" phones two years older than the first iphone, but not the iphone.
