I want to set up a Heavy bag... what do I need?
- To hit something. Hard - To kick something... hoping to improve flexibility and such. Current plans: - Get 100 lb bag - Get regular boxing gloves Should I get anything else? As for mounting it, I'd love to use the solid steel beam in my basement, but it's only 6'7" from the floor, and I'm 6'0" tall, so with the chains that it hangs from will probably put it too low for me. There are 2x8 floor beams that are higher than the iron beam, but I'm not sure they would be sturdy enough to mount the bag to. Thoughts? EDIT: I can use anything from MC Sports [mcsports.com], but that's it... Last edited by Phrozt; 02-08-2012 at 03:39 PM.. "PC Gaming is dead"

Interestingly, I just hung an 80lb. bag in my workout room in my basement. I have 7' ceilings but the bag hangs at a reasonable height. I used an Everlast heavy bag hanger [amazon.com] and drilled right through my drywall into a ceiling beam. I have standard (2x8) beams in my basement though. It's been up about two weeks, no cracks, no problems, and I wail on that thing twice a day (morning & evening) for 10-20 minutes a pop.
I dunno if I'd want a 100lb. bag, I got a bag like this [amazon.com] (not this one specifically but an 80lb. Everlast Nevatear) and it's damned solid. My wrists aren't very strong yet so it still hurts if I punch it at a bad angle. I'm hoping the Thai Boxing class I'm going to start next week will help me avoid that as well. My hands hurt pretty good when I'm done and I do use gloves (but no wraps). I also looked at a bag stand [amazon.com] but didn't want to spend an extra $100. When you say "drilled right through my drywall into a ceiling beam." what exactly do you mean?? Could you take a picture for me?? It sounds like our areas are very similar. |

Here is how I have mine.
![]() I dont recall if I bought that separate or it came with my bag. Definately get some hand wraps, your wrists will thank you: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/...XA1VTJ1SK3 I also have some bag gloves, along with my 16oz gloves. Kyle: Dude! I almost thought those Afghani kids talked you into not liking America.
Stan: No, dude. America may have some problems, but it's our home. Our team. And if you don't wanna root for your team, then you should get the hell out of the stadium. Kyle: Yeah. Stan: <salutes the American flag> Go America. Kyle: <salutes> Go America... Stan: Go Broncos Kyle: Yeah go Broncos. Cartman: Yeah... |

Ohhh now I see what you're saying.
I should have specified.. I'll be putting this into an unfinished basement ceiling. LOC, I see what you're doing... unfortunately I don't have a beam that sturdy.. just 2x8 :/. EDIT: Here's what I have to work with: The room: ![]() Iron beam height from floor: ![]() floor beam height:

Are these 2x8s? This is what I have in my basement (I assume that's what's behind the drywall - I looked in my utility room that doesn't have drywall ceilings & found two of these side-by-side running across the ceiling in there - so made an intuitive leap that this is what was behind my drywall as well). ![]() If that's what you have then it will probably be fine. ETA I mean the ones running left-to-right not the big thick beams. I don't really know about home construction.
