Meanwhile just 7 or 8 of you here complaining. I still listen, but it doesnt mean you're representative of the whole. Last edited by bryantq; 03-15-2012 at 03:12 PM.. The personal views and opinions expressed in this post are exactly that and do not necessarily represent an official opinion or stance of Slickdeals and this is a disclaimer in case I say something stupid. In fact, anything I say should not be taken seriously.

As far as why more people aren't in this thread complaining, it might be due to the fact that some of them realized their ad blocker could block the bubble. Mine doesn't though. I don't have a problem with the bubble itself, just its awkward placement over another feature/icon (the envelope) which I do use and like. A feature that was implemented in the last couple of years, so yes, I do like change when it is implemented in a way that makes my life easier. Right now, I can't see/use the envelope feature on my netbook as the new bubble obscures the envelope almost entirely making it impossible to view. Happiness and depression are both feelings, just like joy and anger. It's not feelings that give us problems. It's what we do with them that makes the difference.

I'll pop in with an "I don't like it". It's in the way, and the damn things are popping up on threads I accidently clicked while perusing the mobile site on my phone. I know about new posts by bold titles, and use the "go to first unread post" button. The black box is ugly and obtrusive and jarring to my sense of completion...I've read everything I want to read, but still have those **** boxes on threads I don't care a thing about. I'm not keeping up with those threads on a daily basis just to get rid of the box!
Please please please move it to "go to first unread post" or allow us to turn them off! You don't get negative feedback because you didn't ask for any feedback...no warning this was coming, no notification at the top of each forum asking for feedback...no nothing. I happened upon this thread while messing around with the FP beta stuff and thought maybe I should check out the Site Questions forum since I haven't been here in a while. Otherwise, I never would have thought to complain about it...I've just been doing my best to ignore the frickin boxes... Reps are back...for now.
I owe loads of gratitude to everyone that got me where I am! Read the *NEW* CVS FAQ and post your questions there. Let's keep the deal threads deal-related, please.Would it kill you to read the wiki? Or to read the thread? All the experts got to where they are by reading...you can too. |

every time someone complains about something you want: you count those who complain. when you want to say that you have a point you say how many use it. lets compare it to past events? how did other things go? since you discount the lounge.. lets say the drug store or freebies forums. the people who complained were small compared to all users of sd. should we not have freebies or a drugstore forum? you claim everyone who accesses the site on a daily basis as those who support it. aka you're picking and choosing your stats. more people would rather leave, or lurk than post in this thread. when fw made its user mistake.. sd said it was different cause it listened to the users who used the site. just go the fw route.. you want it as such, and it is done. you don't care what the active people say. "This guy's walking down the street when he falls in a hole.
"A doctor passes by and the guy shouts 'Hey you. Can you help me?' The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole. "Then a priest comes along and the guy shouts up. The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole. "Then a friend walks by. The friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, 'Are you stupid? Now we're both down here.' The friend says, 'Yeah, but I've been down here before and I know the way out.'" |

You're right that I will never know -exactly- what -everyone- thinks unless i ask everyone and they all respond. Which they wont. So, I have to make decisions with the best data I have. I would be the first person to change something if I thought that the majority disliked it. But of what I do know is this: there are less than 10 different people in this thread who have complained, out of millions. They are not representative of the whole site, and you conveniently glossed over that fact when I pointed it out. It seems hypocritical, considering you tried to turn that notion against me when you wont apply it to yourself. 10 people does not constitute a majority, nor does it constitute an overwhelming opinion to change, so I know I can take my time and do research and continue collecting statistics. Furthermore, what I do know is that its usage rate is increasing. 16,000 different people use it, and that number grows by the day. So contrary to your belief, if this feature was useless, and the "majority" disliked this feature, the usage rate should be dropping. And you're being unfair, trying to invoke a response and imply that because of this people will leave and you are trying to make me look like I don't care... But frankly if I didn't care I wouldn't even respond or take the time to listen. What you fail to see is that just because you're vocal about it and hate it, doesn't mean you're right or that you represent everyone else. Let me also say that almost everyone on this staff has been a user of slickdeals long before they were invited to be a moderator or staff member. So we are part of the active user base. And we tested this feature out ourselves for months before releasing it. We eat our own dog food. Do you want to compare it to past events, and how you've been historically wrong? Classic was removed. No drop in traffic, in fact we've grown significantly since then, in all areas: user activity, number of posts per day, number of votes per day, number of visits per day, number of visits per user. How about when the new frontpage redesigns were released? Way more complaints, but after some small revisions and after everyone got used to it, I would bet money on the fact that people could objectively say its better. I'll try to reiterate it again since you don't seem to be able to grasp my point: I understand there are complaints, I hear them and I am considering them. But I'm saying 10 complaints is not enough to make a knee-jerk reaction, not when there are 16,000 unique individuals using the feature. Last edited by bryantq; 03-17-2012 at 09:14 PM.. |

Meanwhile this new feature has only been out for a few weeks. I say give it time, and we'll continue to collect feedback and make refinements. I would like to point out how even more people complained about the popup notifications when we introduced that. Now that people got used to it, they can't live without it. When it breaks for even a short moment, people complain instantly. In larger numbers. Last edited by bryantq; 03-16-2012 at 11:17 PM.. |

and no i never said that it would be a difference of any feature means they would or would not use the site. i said they would prefer it. if you remember, if you put it to popular vote, classic was more popular than regular. you didn't and eliminated classic. i know there's going to be users who are attracted to the site because of the deals. this gives you an almost unlimited user base. sd has other forums other than the deals. it used to be those users were important. again, if not, fine to disregard their opinions. if you only care about attracting new users and keeping them in the deal forums you're 100% correct in making the site the best possible, it looks perfect for those who would come once a day, check a few threads on items that are of interest of them. you also say that the site is about the community. the community includes those who spend lots of time on the site. they might click on a thread that had an interesting title but thread included absolute crap and don't care about it anymore. why do they want to follow it again? as to stats.. again you say 10 people commenting hate it and now 16k love it. if 100 said it sucked.. would that be enough for you? 1000? still pales in comparison to your 16000. most people give up on complaining because the mods just don't care. i know you're not that type. you've said it in a lot of posts not directed to me you might include an option to turn it off. Oh goody! It looks like it goes away if you don't visit a thread for a little while
That helps a lot.
