Unless you plan on using it for video. In that case the T3i wins hands down.

Even if you dont have a broken camera, you can easily get one off of Ebay for $5-10. The Canon Loyalty ones are $543+tax, so, for many states it'd be $30 cheaper or so.

Yeah, but its not necessarily that huge a difference. Actually the biggest thing between the two is how it fits your hands. I know a friend who loved the T3i and hated the D5100 because he had large hands. Vice-versa for a friend with smaller hands who loved the D5100.

D5100 definitely handles low-light better; and my understanding is the interface is a little more intuitive with the 5100...but, how it fits your hand is gonna make the biggest difference in the end.

D5100 has no focus motor though, and is therefore limited in what lenses it can use, since nikon lenses don't all have in-lens motors like canon.

good point. Squaretrade would be an option too if you are into paying for warranties.
