are these better than any of the disposable blades they make today? i just remember watching my dad shave with the safety razor when i was a kid and i just remember he would have at least 5 or 6 nicks/cuts by the time he was done. it seems like you can save a lot of money using the safety or straight blade, but are they really worth it. i don't think i would ever consider using a straight blade to shave....EVER!

I use the DE safety razor and only get cut when I use a blade that doesn't agree with me or when I don't tighten the head ( I use a butterfly DE ) enough.

Just get a blade sampler pack from ebay or wherever and you can see what blades suit you best. Depending on your choice they can be as cheap as $8 for 100 blades which is a lot cheaper than a $1 for one disposable. Oh btw, the feather blades are very sharp :eek, so be careful with them.

From what I've been reading, you have to take your time when shaving with this type of razor. I think I will take your advice and get one off ebay or amazon. Without a doubt, you will save money in the long run. Thanks

I use a merkur double edge (DE) safety razor, with derby blades ($0.15/each). I started using them 2 years ago, and have loved it since. It's a smooth and close shave, makes my day every morning. I use gillette for travel only.

Normally a shave takes me 5 mins (versus 3 minutes on a gillette), so yeah it's technically longer by 2 mins.

There's also the unquantifiable aspect of 'returning to manliness'.

My wife wants me to get this--she says that using left to right motions below the chin is essential and she likes how they even add on the 'razor coffin'. Gotta go--the insurance agent is here!

I agree, men should be men, and stop being sissies. Start by driving cars with manual transmissions, and leave automatics for the ladies, as originally intended.
