Audit: North Dakota university awarded unearned degrees

Facing pressure to bring in more students as North Dakota's booming oil industry made it tougher to coax new high school graduates into college, Dickinson State University began looking overseas to boost its enrollment.

China, which sends more students to U.S. universities than any other nation, became one of the school's more reliable suppliers of young people.

But as an audit made public Friday revealed, lax recordkeeping and oversight resulted in hundreds of degrees being awarded to students who didn't finish their course work. Others enrolled who couldn't speak English or hadn't achieved the "C'' average normally required for admission.

The report depicts Dickinson State as a diploma mill for foreign students, most of whom were Chinese. Of 410 foreign students who have received four-year degrees since 2003 — most of them in the past four years — 400 did not fulfill all the graduation requirements, it said.

I met a bunch when I had to take a county college class as a pre-requisite for my regular school,, Met 3 girls, "somewhat pretty" all of which could do physics worded differential problems WITHOUT a pen or paper. In their freakin MINDs.

I mean,, yea it's basic 2nd order,, drilled stuff,,, NONTHELESS,,, they're REALLY good at it. Like as good as I am at halo.

Guilt by association. Any HR person that hears about it, isn't going to bother trying to figure who is affected and who isn't. They are simply going to shred any resume that has Dickinson State printed on it. Do you actually think anyone in HR will do otherwise?

I've never worked at a company with a full-time HR person. Grads will just have to work for smaller companies far from North Dakota.

have yet to see an hr person who is smart enough to follow current events, let alone maintain a "list" of schools with questionable programs.
The only university I've ever seen HR people have issues with is University of Phoenix, which is moronic since I've found most UoP grads to be smarter and better educated than ones from many public state universities.

Considering that you are basing your opinion on 3 Chinese girls that you once met, I am not surprised that you were convinced that this means that "nearly every one of these chinese students can do up to Calc 5 Blindfolded." Nonetheless, this is not the case. China ranks 97th on the UN's Education Index.

You should PM me your secrets, because as far as I'm concerned, higher education is the biggest private money making sham ever invented. In 2 years, I feel like I've done nothing besides waste money, and time sitting in classes, learning next to nothing, yet still getting good grades.


I've certainly thought about buying a diploma, since I figured not that many people actually look at them nowadays.
