The rate hikes usually come in February. You are locked in, under new service, for your first 12 months so if you would sign up now you would probably see your price increase in March of 2013. Then they will usually raise the programming fees about $4 a month. The contract states that they can do this, you aren't locked into any prices after your first 12 months per the contract.
Dish does the same thing. They hike their rate after the first 12 months. I had an 18 month contract with Dish about 4 years ago, and they also increased my rate after 1 year.

Also if you live in an area where storms or snow come and go....... Read the small print, Mother nature cannot be a reason to cancel. Also, Good luck getting someone that speaks english on the phone 90% of the time. They're bullshit got me to the point I payed the $180 to get out of the last 9 months of my contract.
I haven't has that problem with the reps though

After your first 12 months you can usually get decent discounts to keep you on. Check the discount threads on here and you'll see numerous discounts are readily available even for people currently under contract.
The contracts now (most?) are for 2 years, so no extra discount, just price increases

Guys, the HOME MEDIA CENTER DVR cannot be hyped enough. I install for DirecTV, and the thing really is incredible. Five freaking tuners means you can record five shows at once anywhere in your house where you have an HD receiver. 100% worth the $99. Dish Network is coming out with a POS "hopper" wanna be receiver, that can only record 3 shows at once. They will CLAIM it can record 6 shows at once but ONLY IF FOUR OF THOSE SHOWS ARE THE FOUR MAJOR NETWORKS, and that is ONLY during certain hours.... so yeah, DirecTV blows away Dish.

1TB drive and 100 show limit for the repeat recordings is weak in my book. I would rather have multiple DVRs like I do now.

I was interested in taking sonic.net along with direct TV. But paying more for the second year is giving me second thoughts...

So its a 24 month contract but they can raise the rates to anything they want after 12? That is a little scary.

Yes, in reality that is true but in reality they have increased the programming fees no more than $4 or $5 each during each February during the time I've had the service. You can always cancel by paying the $240 ETF (amount due after your first 12 months). If you are paying $80 a month for the service that is only 3 months of payment you need to make to complete your contract, not 12 months to finish out your contract.

Dish network is better, for me anyway. Head to head Dish was nearly $30 per month cheaper with comparable channels + a $200 rebate sweetened the deal! The difference was mainly in receivers. Dish receivers can run 2 tvs so less fees.

Both have their pluses and minues....if anyone is looking for sports in HD they need to go with Directv. No MLB Extra Innings or NFL Sunday Ticket with Dish.

Valid point, not much of a sports fan here though.
