I've never had to do that for mine. I've had it for around 8 years, and it still works fine.

You might just be lucky then. Just look up space bar under user review and quite a few people have had this problem.


I went through several thinking it might be defective and MS kept giving me the run around so I gave up on it.

I think this was the case the first month or so but but fixed itself rather nicely though normal usage. You could try repeatedly hitting it "normally" for a few hours right out of the box and it should loosen up to an uncomfortable but viable state. Then it wouldn't take nearly as long.


The youngest of these that I have which is half a year old- the spacebar when hit with left thumb is as smooth as any other keyboard, while with the right thumb feels different, but still registers with normal force.


When I get a new one in again I'll see just how many hours of spacebar tapping is needed to loosen to a usable state.

It seemed to work fine if your thumbs are both directly in the center. Unfortunately that was not comfortable for me.
I didn't have these very long though so wear & tear may make them more "useable". for your helpful post.
