If he's high school aged & you think he'll be in it for a while, take him to a specialty running store & get him fitted by someone who knows what they're doing. You only have to do this once & your first pair of shoes will probably be ~$100, but then after that you'll know what he needs & can shop based on price.
If he's younger or not too serious about it, then just take him to Kohls & have him try some Asics or Nike running shoes & see what are the most comfortable.
I wouldn't worry about it too much to be honest. I would probably ask his coach for a recommendation...and go from there. The sports my kids play, the coaches are very knowledgeable at the gear they need, where to get it etc Just my experience though.
