hmm. i do mostly play bf3. currently have a gtx465. i'm not really sure what the eyefinity consist of. thats basically if you're using multiple displays correct? i also heard about the massive ram consumption in ultra. would this card run bf3 on ultra settings with low AA? appreciate the help.

This is quite interesting. 2GB VRAM would help in BF3 to add on AA and stuff like that.
However, I don't think 2GB of VRAM is practical unless you're gonna XFIRE in which you might hate (or not!) microstuttering. 2GB VRAM works best with 6950's or 6970's since they have the horsepower to push rendering all of those resolutions at max. |

I saw the promo in a Newegg email, compared specs a bit, then got one.
I used the $20 for $40 Google Offer for Newegg from a while back in addition to the Promo code, and I'll get a mail in rebate done, so quite a bit off for me. ![]() I currently have a HD 5770 running 3x 23" LCDs in Eyefinity for gaming. At 5760x1080 I sometimes have to turn off AA or put it really low in games with a lot of textures and objects on screen. I notice it a lot in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC, CS, and CoP for instance, granted I also have the "Complete" mods which completely overhaul all the graphics and up the requirements for smooth play too... but yeah. Sometimes I turn the resolution down to 4800x900, hopefully this more powerful card and the added ram will help. From what I understand this card should be just slightly less powerful than 2x 5770 in crossfire. I was originally wanting a HD 6950 2GB that I could unlock stream processors on, but at this price, I just had to get the 6870. My brother gets my old card so he will stop playing Minecraft in Eyefinity on my gaming PC and complaining about low vision distance on his current no-GPU PC... I hope... So everyone is essentially happy. If I get the Dirt 3 coupon with it too, it would be nice, but I don't know if I'll actually use it, racing games are not usually my thing. If anyone gets set up for Eyefinity, I'd strongly recommend setting up resolution pre-sets in catalyst control center. A few for different Eyefinity resolutions and a few different non-Eyefinity resolutions. This makes it a breeze to switch between 5760x1080 Eyefinity for gaming and three separate 1920x1080 screens for web browsing, productivity, etc... to even single display presets if desired for movies or games that don't play play nice with Eyefinity. The presets will show up in the menu you can get to from right clicking the little ATI/AMD icon in the task bar. I believe you can also set up keyboard shortcuts, but I haven't had enough need to... Also... The "active" displayport adapters stuff... The old generations of "active" adapters drew power from USB. The newer generation of "active" adapters are much more energy efficient and draw power from the displayport on the card, no USB port for power needed... Though as I understand it there are still some higher end active adapters that still need the USB port for power and their max resolution and/or throughput is a lot higher than the no-USB active adapters... as well there are a few cards whose displayport outs cant carry the current for the no-USB active adapters or so I think I have read... I dunno, it gets un-necissarily complicated sometimes. |

I was tempted to get 2 of these 6870's last night, for CFX. I have installed this card before and it's not that loud. It runs cool and has some headroom for overclocking, both on the core and memory. Last edited by LoneRanger; 02-21-2012 at 02:48 PM.. |
