AMEX prepaid card. Get $25 gift card after 1st reload

Well, I'm glad I decided to call in and cancel my prepaids AFTER I checked this thread and saw that people filed complaints and got their $25 credits. Looks like I missed out on $50.

And I thought I might share this information with you. Upon 'canceling' the card, AmEx tells me that the card numbers will still show up in my online account as 'INACTIVE' after 48 hours (right now they are 'SUSPENDED'). I told them this is not satisfactory. Cancellation means full termination of the card number and any record of it with respect to my account. The supervisor with whom I spoke told me that he doesn't know if the card number will be deleted, when it will be deleted, and how that decision will be made (by the "back end team"). I explained multiple times this is not satisfactory, but they didn't listen.

They say that once the card is deactivated, the card number cannot be reactivated, used by anyone, etc. even by AmEx. Again, my question is, if this is the case, why not just delete it and detach it from my account? No direct answer. They kept contradicting themselves, first telling me that the card number will be removed from my account, then saying that's only a possibility and it's handled by the "back end team".

I'm a little disappointed. If I call to cancel something, I figure it would be fully canceled, terminated, and removed from my account. Having the card number still exist in my account with status 'INACTIVE' is not the same as full termination. I don't care if nobody has access or can reactivate it. If I want it gone and closed, it should be gone and closed.

On a side note, if I do want to complain about not getting the $25 credit on two of these cards (which have been 'deactivated'), who should I go to? The prepaid customer service? My credit card account? BBB?

I e-mailed AmEx about not getting the credits from the February promotion through my credit card account. They responded and said that it required a $200 minimum load. I replied and said that my promotion was only $25 minimum load and that they may have confused it with a more recent one.

edit - update, I've been told that $50 has been credited to my CC account and should appear in 24-48 hours.

Why does it matter? You admit that it's just a cosmetic change. When you cancel credit cards, they're still on your credit report.

Doesn't make sense to cancel them even if they're empty, the road side assistance makes them worth keepin them in your wallet unless you like giving AAA $ every year plus the purchase protection is another added bonus that is free.

All the amex haters canceling what are essentially FREE benefits, I don't think you qualify to be a SDer.

Has anyone tested that ATM network that advertises free withdrawals? Are they really free for everyone without membership to their credit union network or whatever?

Cancelled credit cards will fall off your credit report after 10 years. Not that this is a credit card though.

Looks like some one straightened out Amex. They sent us remaining gift cards for cards purchased end of the month.

I totally forgot about this deal. Just went online and checked my balance. Did not receive the $25 bonus. Called AMEX and they credited me the $25 without questions. I did spend 10 minutes waiting while the rep was doing his research, though. But it was not much hassle at all.

Totally forgot about this promotion. Called in this morning and after about 15 mins of wait, the CSR loaded $25 to my prepaid card.

So everything works out!

I got up the courage and tried to explain the situation to them again after 6 months.

First time, got transfered to India or else where, was difficult to understand her. She transfered to supervisor, 25-30 minutes later, had to research, said i wasnt eligible for code etc
Hung up eventually and called back, done in 4 minutes, then put wife on phones, hers done in 3 minutes ( She already had the code info researched).

7 minutes for $50 in amex credit. Originally was supposed to be gift card, since all the confusion she just credited the prepaid card, which thankfully i still have.

Going out for a nice lunch at shrimp house on Amex

Well, I got a card back in March. Never received the $25 gift card. Called today, and was denied because I didn't get the original email.

Pretty low on AMEX's part.

Call back in 10 seconds, That's what happened to me after 40 minutes of explaining and holds and transfers to be denied. Called back into system, different center, approved within 5-6 minutes of research, When done, I kindly asked to take care of the same issue for my wife, again approved.
