Atheists To Rally On National Mall Next Month

On March 24, the National Mall will be populated by atheists, generally defined by an absence in belief of deities or other religious icons.

"There are 40 to 50 million atheists in the United States... We are the most hated … for no reason other than pure and simple religious bigotry, spurned by ignorance,” David Silverman said.

Lead researcher Penny Edgell said that she was surprised by this: "We thought that in the wake of 9/11, people would target Muslims. Frankly, we expected atheists to be a throwaway group." Nevertheless, the numbers are so extreme that she was led to conclude that they are "a glaring exception to the rule of increasing tolerance over the last 30 years." It's not that bigotry and discrimination against Muslims is appropriate, but at least it's not hard to understand where such attitudes would come from.

Atheists are attacking others religious freedom via the courts and threats of lawsuits and thus they arent winning friends....though I think hate is too strong a word.

look you don't need a University of Minnesota study to prove that racial hatred, hatred of the gay community, and hatred of the muslim population in this country far outweighs this so called hatred of atheists. I fail to see much hatred being spewed at atheists. Atheists are nothing more than an annoyance to most people I don't see where you are getting the word hate from?

They are obviously craving for the status of "hated minority", with "hate-crime" laws to protect them etc. But the real hate is against anything Christian.

There is an important difference between atheism and religionism (like sexism racism and other isms). Atheism is simple lack of belief in God, David Silverman is a religionist - actively fighting against religious people, and Christians in particular.
