In an ideal world I don't store anything at home. I watch it anywhere/anytime I want to and only pay for the content I watch. Cable in it's current form is the opposite. |

In my ideal world, I would store everything I care about at home. I don't want to have to rely on cloud providers, trust them with my content, hope that the content I want to watch is still available, etc. And of course in the real world there are things to consider like download caps, which make going 100% cloud impossible. I won't go too deep into why a la carte TV doesn't really work, but the short answer is that popular shows (American Idol) pay for niche shows (Fringe). You may not want American Idol and only want Fringe, but if Fringe could not amortize its losses against American Idol's profits there would be no Fringe. (note that American Idol and Fringe are created by two different and unrelated production companies, so they benefit from Fox being able to smooth things out). |

So I was looking into some kind of way to do Picture-in-Picture on my 47" LCD, I like to always have something on in the background while I am playing on my computer. Turns out, there is not really an easy way to do this anymore. I came across the Ceton as the only real viable option for this, but saw a couple posts back that when running Ceton in WMC it has to be full screen. Is this true, would there be no way to have a small windows of WMC playing my live TV while I browse the web and do whatever else on my computer? Could maybe a second small monitor be used exclusively for WMC/Ceton(maximized) and still have use of the 47" as my primary monitor?

Connect PC to Input 1, which will be the "bigger screen" and connect Media Center Extender to input 2, which will be the "smaller screen." Do whatever you do on the big screen, and control the smaller screen through media center extender. If you have a video card that has dual monitor support. Instead of extending the dasktop across 2 monitors, have 2 separate desktops. One will run WMC, and the other will be the PC. Once again, you have to have a TV that supports true Picture-in-Picture like the TV's did in the 90's. 5 TV's in the house with Verizon FiOS and we only pay $3.99/month to connect all 5 of them. Thanks to Ceton InfiniTV4 and CableCard.

I wasn't clear when I posted. My 47" LG doesn't support PiP, most newer TV's do not, and even if they do, they do not support PiP from the same type of input(ie: hdmi and hdmi). I could use a second smaller monitor but ideally I was just wanting to use my 47" LG and watch live tv in a smaller window to one corner and everything else to fill the main screen. When I saw that post a few pages back saying you can't use WMC to watch live TV unless it is maximized, I got scared.

Go here: https://www.comcast.com/Localizat...3farea%3d0 Then select the package type. I have "Limited Cable" which all channels between 0-100 are NOT HD, but 103-113 are in face the local HD channels which I get. On the bottem of the page it says: HD - To receive HD features and benefits, an HD television (not provided), HD Digital Converter or CableCARD and HD Tech Fee is required. I have a Motorola MTR700 tuning adapter and the Ceton InfiniTV 4 USB with Charter Digital Cable.
What is the correct way to set up the tuning adapter? I have a direct cable line coming up from the basement to a two-way splitter. Should I connect both the tuning adapter and Ceton Infinitv device separately with a coaxial cable to the splitter? Or should I connect the coaxial cable into the tuning adapter and then use the out port on the tuning adapter to connect the coaxial cable from it to the Infinitv device? Obviously I would still connect both the Tuning Adapter and InfiniTV device to the PC with a USB cable as well. Thanks for your help! Last edited by TDMVP73; 03-10-2012 at 03:03 PM.. |

If so, how did you connect the tuning adapter? I have a direct cable line coming up from the basement to a two-way splitter. It sounds like I have the exact same problem as you, a bad cable card. The thing just won't validate... no matter how many hits or INITs they send to it. I had to have a tech come out today... who had no cable cards or tuning adapters on the truck (of course - even though I specifically told the guy on the phone to notate I may need that). Now I have to deal with them again tomorrow. I just wanted to make sure I have everything connected correctly. |
