Why live in New York?

507 92 February 20, 2012 at 04:48 PM
Don't get me wrong New York is awesome as a visitor/tourist, but I just can not fathom the possibility of living there as a permanent resident. For what you pay in housing/apartments in New York you can buy/finance a nice mansion any where else! $20 million in New York might buy you a nice top floor penthouse but if you put that $20 million in another state you might buy yourself a 8-10 acre piece of land AND have money left over to build your dream home + buy yourself a nice car. Additionally the food there is simply outrageous and god forbid if you smoke cigarettes. The food was good but for the price I could have bought dinner for 4 people at a nice upscale restaurant somewhere else and when my BF was buying cigarettes I saw that he was paying $15 dollars for one PACK, omg!

The people are nice for the most part but driving is a different story lol. Some people were soo aggressive and parallel parking was not fun.

People in New York, why do you live in such an expensive state? Why not move to the Hamptons or something?

I wouldn't live in New York but if I could afford it, I would live in London. There's a great vibe about big cities and having all the shops, museums, theaters, etc. right at your doorstep appeals to a lot of people.

State, or city? I don't think the entire state is that expensive.

I am grateful for all those people who want to live in New York or any other big city for that matter. Without all those people crammed into those areas all the places I would want to live and visit would be much more crowded. laugh out loud

I grew up in the NYC suburbs, about 40 miles north. Left when I was 18 to go to college in San Diego. I always thought I'd want to live in NYC after I graduated, and before starting a family - NYC is such a great city. But after living in SoCal, I lost my desire to live in NYC.

I wouldn't mind living in NY too much, but I would want the rent control to be removed first

Why does everyone think Manhattan/New York City represent all of New York? The state is much bigger than that and there are far other places in New York that are cheaper like the rest of the United States.

1,000-1500 dollars a month for a jail cell (1 br maybe 2 br, 1 bath) in Brooklyn is a real nice alternative!

Get a richer BF and come back and ask again. When you're rich $20 mill to you is like nothing to the rich person.

I can assure you that New York City is a completely different world than the rest of state. In fact, most of NYS is the boonies.

As for NYC, I love the city but I dislike how expensive it is. The idea of a city income tax annoys me.
