TV audio setup?

Initial Z 688 92 February 21, 2012 at 10:35 PM
Hey guys. I have a question about setting up a new sound bar I got for my TV.

TV - 46" Element ELDFW464:
http://www.elementelectronics.com.../eldfw464/

Sound Bar - Vizio VSB200
http://www.vizio.com/vsb200.html

So currently, I have my DirecTV HD box and my PS3 connected to my TV via HDMI cables. The problem is that I don't really like the sound on my TV, so that is why I got the sound bar. When I finally opened my sound bar, I realized that there are 2 types of inputs: 2x Stereo RCA Input and 1x S/PDIF Fiber Optic TOSLINK Input. My TV only has 1 audio output: Coaxial Audio out connector [RCA]

I don't have any cables to connect my TV to my sound bar, so I am looking for one. The question is, what am I supposed to get? I did a quick search on google and someone said that my TV does not have a toslink connection (which I assume is the better connection?). He recommended to get some kind of converter to be able to get the toslink connection.

I'm kind of lost and don't exactly understand this audio stuff. Can someone recommend me a cable to get so I am able to use my sound bar? Thanks!

I'm not sure about coax to toslink, that wouldn't be a passive adapter.

The specs on the Element site does say that the tv has a headphone jack; you may be able to get a 3.5mm to rca adapter [monoprice.com] to connect the two.

I didn't see the jack in the back view in the manual, I'm assuming it must be on the side?

Thanks! I'll take a look at my TV when I get back.

Actually.. I just did a little search on google.. it turns out there is NO headphone jack:

This TV does NOT have Red and White RCA audio out jacks.

This TV does NOT have a headphone jack.

The only audio out connection is a single Coaxial Audio out cable connection. In other words, it was designed to connect to a surround sound system with a single coaxial audio connection or by HDMI.

OR

Buy a convert box for about $15-$20 that converts the single Coaxial audio cable back to the old RCA Red and White connectors.
Any other ideas?

use the rca red/white from the tv box to the sound bar and use the optical cable from the ps3 to the sound bar.

To the OP:

Do the directv box and PS3 have regular analog white/red rca out? If so maybe just go rca out from the directv box and the ps3 to the soundbar since since the soundbar has two sets of rca inputs.

I think the analog output from the red/white RCA's will be out of sync with the video.

Your best bet may be to buy the cheapest receiver you can find that will allow you to input coaxial and output to your speaker.

There are no component audio out on the TV, but the optical from the ps3 should work.

Yes this is what i was saying.

Watching TV
HDMI from tv box to tv for video.
RCA from tv box to sound bar for sound.

Playing PS3
HDMI from PS3 to tv for video.
Optical from PS3 to tv for sound.

Hmm.. I didn't think it would work like that.. I can give it a shot when I get home tonight. I believe my tv box does have RCA output, but I need to double check.

Thanks to everyone that has responded so far! I really appreciate the help Big Grin
Btw.. what is FIL? And does optical = s/pdif?

No, you need one of these:
http://www.monoprice.com/products...1&format=2

Use that with a TOSLINK cable. It will convert the digital audio out from your TV into TOSLINK audio.

Good Luck, not every device allows you to mix and match video and audio outputs/inputs.

S/PDIF is just the digital audio transmission spec used for interconnect audio equipment. The connector and transmission medium can vary.

Does anyone know if it works for the PS3? Output video via hdmi and output audio via optical?

I tried it on my DirecTV box, and I was able to get the video via hdmi and audio via rca cables.

I wouldn't be so hung up on trying to use the optical. You'll probably never notice any difference. You're not going into some high end 5.1 or 7.1 receiver/surround sound system. That's unless the PS3 rca analogs don't get sound feed or something if you use HDMI to the TV.

You can do it like that. Check your audio settings on the ps3. Though you only get stereo output when using multi- out setting
