9/2012 Amazon Taxes are coming

you'd think a governor would approach amazon with a sweet deal: build those distribution centers in my state & you can ignore sales tax for X years.

This is going to happen nation-wide. Technically you're supposed to claim and pay 'use tax' on purchased goods that weren't taxed when purchased. I never realized the savings advantage of making large or many accumulated amazon/online purchases over the year. I guess the negative of paying shipping always outweighed it for me.

I think its a bit unfair because if that happens nation wide in the long run Amazon won't profit as much as its doing. The reason Amazon is pretty sweet is when you buy expensive items without tax course if its a small item its really nothing, but when its an item more than 50 bucks and more it starts hurting. Also Amazon is already paying the shipping its going to hurt them business wise.

Although I definitely love Amazon and want to pay as little tax as possible, the reason legislation is changing is:

1. generate revenue from all online sales
2. to level the playing field for businesses in-state

I understand both, especially number 2 when you have the option to buy a big ticket item, and shipping isn't an issue, you're gonna want to save the $50 and go through Amazon, like anyone else would. When California first started taxing them because Amazon had affiliates out there, they instantly shut them down so they didn't have to pay tax. I know a couple of states have made agreements with them to start charging tax at a set future date.

Of course, this only happens just as I peak in my shipments from amazon.

One caveat is that there are *thousands* of different tax schemes for states and municipalities - can you imagine having to keep track of all that, who to pay, how much to charge? Don't forget that some places have city/local taxes in addition to a state tax. When I lived in NY, the state had a flat sales tax then each county had an additional tax.

It sucks though I mean I don't have a problem (mentioned it in post a lot) paying, tax, but its becoming ridiculous with so many taxes to pay. I love Amazon and its going to reduce sales for Amazon in the long run. Question is when will it hit my state. Also make it a reasonable taxation the recycling fee is dumb. One of the reasons I think its dumb is I don't get my refund back when my T.V. dies or is to old to get it back (like crv on cans etc).

Yeah, I've heard of the recycling fee for CA. Too many taxes is a different political issue.

I definitely agree with you. Amazon is pretty amazing when you have the abilities of Prime with free two day shipping or super saver when spending a certain amount. I guess all you can do is buy while you can...of course while claiming use tax on your state return.

we have had this forever in NY. before 2011 10% of the US was paying amazon tax at checkout...this year it is going to be much more!
