Thread Details

Last Edited by godfather927 February 27, 2012 at 11:54 AM
Thread to discuss movies of any type and date, but perhaps with more focus on recent ones in the past couple years.

Please be courteous to others when discussing a fairly recent movie with unexpected plot elements or endings, and always spoiler tag comments that could ruin the story for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet. When trying to decide whether or not to tag something, please err on the side of caution since even the mention that a certain movie has a twist (without divulging what it is) could end up being a mini-spoiler itself.

In case you don't already know how, you can spoiler tag any block of text with the following tags:

this tag goes at the end of the hidden text ~~~~>
this tag goes at the beginning of the hidden text ~~~~>
Ghostbusters -- eh. Low-brow compared to the original, which wasn't exactly high-brow. I have to mention the irony and hypocrisy of the producers and actors saying that everyone who hated the trailer were sexist and hate women, and then the movie comes out and it's full of sexist man-hating.

Buzzard -- Take a SlickDealer, then remove all morals as they constantly try to cheat at everything to save a dollar. Stealing office supplies and returning them to the store without a receipt, cutting his hand then trying to stop the blood long enough to get to work so he can blame it on a work accident, etc. No, it's not a comedy.

Never Back Down: No Surrender - my favorite underrated action star, (and he's good at regular acting too!), Michael Jai White, kicks butt in an MMA-inspired martial arts movie.

Batman: The Killing Joke -- the popular comic book (uh, I mean graphic novel) story comes to life in animated form. The story has the ingredients for an inspired, R-rated, dark and twisted tale like the graphic novel it's spawned from, but the animation and some other things lets it down.

Warcraft -- World of Warcraft movie. How does someone screw this up? shake head

Has to agree about Ghostbusters. It was meh. Loves Leslie Jones on SNL but she was ok here. Loved Kate McKinnon as the female Egon, but the rest were just ok. Chris Hemsworth, by far, was the best as the idiot receptionist.

White God -- Dad gets rid of girl's dog. Girl and dog get mad. One of them gets really mad. Drama turns into horror. I guess there's also some metaphors in there about immigration and race if you care to look from that view, but there would be multiple angles to debate what it means.

The End of the Tour -- Jason Segel plays a famous writer who hangs out with a Rolling Stone writer doing an article on him. 90 minutes of sitting around pondering about life. It must be pretty good considering it made me forget how terrible Jesse Eisenberg was as Lex Luthor in Batman v. Superman.

The Keeping Room -- Three women fight to save their land and their lives from Civil War soldiers. Slow. Lots of sitting there doing nothing, dramatically. This movie must have been produced by the NRA because the women get beat up and worse by physically stronger men until they get some guns as equalizers.

Age of Adaline -- Love story with Blake Lively and the relationship problems that come with never aging. Predictable at times, illogical at times, but overall a nice watch if you're in the mood for some lovey-dovey with a slice of supernatural.

Runoff -- Joanne Kelly (Warehouse 13) struggles over her decision whether to illegally dispose of chemical waste on her farm in order to have enough money to save it. Slow but questions morals and stuff.

The Shallows -- Bikini-clad Blake Lively vs. a shark. yeah. Pretty good!

Independence Day: Resurgence -- oh god make it stop.

Any opinions on Suicide Squad? I'm trying to decide if I want to spend the money to see it in theaters.

between Thursday and sunday night, i saw:

Stanford prison study - REALLY GOOOD, i knew about it and had read about it but seeing it "reenacted" was really interesting and disturbing. the movie isn't 100% accurate because it combines things since it compresses like a week into 2 hours. there is a google talk with the psychologist that ran it and that was also interesting.

straight out of Compton - so so, I'm not sure if it because of the recent events in Milwaukee but it felt like that movie was more about the white man screwing the black man over than about making music. on a side note, i have to find a different way to work if there is an accident on the freeway. the road i would take, takes me right past where they were rioting, smashing shops, and pulling white people from cars. farking assholes, go on destroy your neighborhood and then complain why there are no jobs because no one wants to open a business there. /rant

love and mercy - really good, love john cusack. acting was really good and the movie was shot exceptionally well too. tells 2 stories from brian Wilson's life, flipping back and forth in time. (the manager is the same manager (actor) from straight out of Compton actually)

st Vincent - it was funny, and bill murray was great, overall kind of so-so. plot just seemed familiar and predictable. it predictably builds up to a point and then might surprise you.

rock the Kasbah - interesting, only so-so though. i think it took a serious social problem, how women are treated in Islamic culture, and didn't do it justice. i felt that way about chiraq too. took a serious problem, brought it to light and made a joke of it. (i had more issues with chiraq)

Achievements are not for the meek, it is better to forfeit inheritance of the earth so that the mighty may look upon my gamerscore, and despair. Achievements are for men who dream; men who dare; men who achieve! Men who carve out entire galaxies with nothing more than nimble cheetos-dusted fingers and their wits, and in our leisurely twilight days we shall sit by softly flickering fires with our descendants recounting the tales of these unimaginable glories.

True, could've also been a euphemism for the preformed turds still making their way through his colon prior to being dropped off at the pool.
