Thread Details

Thread to discuss movies of any type and date, but perhaps with more focus on recent ones in the past couple years.

Please be courteous to others when discussing a fairly recent movie with unexpected plot elements or endings, and always spoiler tag comments that could ruin the story for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet. When trying to decide whether or not to tag something, please err on the side of caution since even the mention that a certain movie has a twist (without divulging what it is) could end up being a mini-spoiler itself.

In case you don't already know how, you can spoiler tag any block of text with the following tags:

this tag goes at the end of the hidden text ~~~~>
this tag goes at the beginning of the hidden text ~~~~>
Anyone see Chronicle? Act of Valor?
We have a Groupon to use and it is my choice. We are going to go see that sometime in the next 2 weeks. But I saw this over the weekend. 30% of critics liked it; 86% of users liked it.

It was near 22% Critics on Saturday. I don't know if I have saw one so bi-polar.

We should do a star rating.. like out of 5.

5 - must see in theaters if you can
4 - must rent
3 - watch if free
2 - forgettable
1 - avoid

or something

I like "1-Buy, 2-Rent, 3-Skip" Theater basically equals a Buy that is brand new...

I'd prefer a n/10 rating system, others aren't granular enough.

I would prefer a points-based rating, with categories including (but not limited to): Explosions, action scenes, gun fights, nudity, profanity, or any other category that makes a movie worth watching.

Watched The Town the other night. Not as good as I anticipated but probably worth checking it out.

But if you are just in it for the action, it is pretty good. They apparently used real bullets during filming o__o.
That probably sucked for anyone who was shot.

I enjoyed it for the most part, but it fell way short of Heat (the movie it was modeled after.)

Same. Enjoyed The Town (worth watching as a rental)but had no clue it was modeled after Heat. And as I'm sure most would agree those two movies don't even belong in the same realm of comparison.

Did you see The Town before Heat? Or Heat before The Town.

Heat two or three times before Town. But a good deal of time before ............

oh shit...I suddenly see the parallels.

LMAO

EDIT:

I was going to say that there was a good deal of time between the two movies when it suddenly dawned on me and I saw the parallels.

laugh out loud If you recall, there's actually a scene in the Town where Affleck's character is watching a certain movie on his TV. *hint, hint*

I saw Act of Valor and yes heard they used live ammo.

But no way did they use it for every scene.. majority of the scenes where people were involved I am sure had dummy fire.

Still a pretty cool movie.. glad I got to see it for free a few weeks ago (thanks SD!)

I vaguely recall that scene.

But just the similarities with having to funny how that all dawned on me at that very moment.

edit: wow, i'm pretty sure i got the spoiler tags right but with my SD all farked up I can't tell. in fact, it looks like I didn't input any spoiler tags at all as I can see everything I wrote. Someone let me know i got it right please.

You got em right. There are a few other similarities as well:
I think the story of The Town was actually based of a book, so it's probably more appropriate to call it an "homage" to Heat in the way it was filmed.
