Thread Details

Thread to discuss movies of any type and date, but perhaps with more focus on recent ones in the past couple years.

Please be courteous to others when discussing a fairly recent movie with unexpected plot elements or endings, and always spoiler tag comments that could ruin the story for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet. When trying to decide whether or not to tag something, please err on the side of caution since even the mention that a certain movie has a twist (without divulging what it is) could end up being a mini-spoiler itself.

In case you don't already know how, you can spoiler tag any block of text with the following tags:

this tag goes at the end of the hidden text ~~~~>
this tag goes at the beginning of the hidden text ~~~~>
Umm, not sure that will happen, pretty sure fox owns F4 along with xmen so Disney cant just use the characters.
correct, Disney would have to negotiate with Fox the way they did with Sony for the rights to use the F4 characters. But I doubt that will happen since they would rather just have the rights back for free. Marvel is even going as far as stopping publication of the Fantastic 4 comic books for now.

Well without that crossover, it makes F4 more worthless in its attempt to reboot. Kinda dims the reboot a bit for me. The future tie-ins leading to the pinnacle of the story arch would have been great to see. Probably why I like the X-Men but hate that they never pop into the rest of the Marvel film world.

Speaking of film rights:

I think (conjecture on the web) that fox is distancing itself from f4 - pulling movie money etc. that could be bs though.

Maybe it's like the 1994 f4 movie? Maybe they had to make it or lose the rights.

Umm I don't think so. I don't think it's like boxing title belts where there has to be used/defended otherwise rights are lost. I think once they buy the rights, they keep it until they wish to sell it. If the commodity is hot, then no reason to sell. But if the commodity is stone cold, then a good reason to sell and get something back for it. Marvel is hot right now so I doubt they'll sell unless for a buttload of money.

it is like a boxing belt, Fox has to keep producing Fantastic 4 and Xmen movies withing a certain time frame or they loose the rights to those characters and they revert back to Marvel. Hopefully this movie bombs hard enough that fox decides that fantastic 4 isnt worth another sequel and just lets it go back to Marvel. I wish the same thing would happen to XMen, but those movies make too much money despite Bryan Singers craptastic directing and story telling.

Looking forward, Marvel can regain their characters but it’ll be nothing short of jumping through a ring of fire. The studio can shell out truckloads of cash to buy them back or wait for box office numbers to be so bad the studio that owns them doesn’t have any interest in following them up, ie. Ang Lee’s Hulk (thanks, Universal!). Not meeting a deadline for filming the property is the easiest way – most of the contracts have a clause that allows the rights to revert back to Marvel if principle photography doesn’t begin by a certain date after the initial release or if they make an upfront payment as if they were going to start principal photography. This, in part, is the reason we see studios releasing films in rapid succession.

The possibility of Marvel having complete control of their character properties, like its comic rival DC, is a matter of time.

Thanks for that. I hope it bombs too and Fox just gets over it and lets Marvel buy the rights back straight out. I know they'd cook up a reboot of the franchise yet again and make it work. However, it looks like F4 has a sequel planned for 2017 so unless it is a total bust on the level of John Carter. Well maybe not that bad, but you get what I mean. Sadly I'll go see F4 anyway just to see what it's about. Confusing I know.
