Thread Details

Thread to discuss movies of any type and date, but perhaps with more focus on recent ones in the past couple years.

Please be courteous to others when discussing a fairly recent movie with unexpected plot elements or endings, and always spoiler tag comments that could ruin the story for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet. When trying to decide whether or not to tag something, please err on the side of caution since even the mention that a certain movie has a twist (without divulging what it is) could end up being a mini-spoiler itself.

In case you don't already know how, you can spoiler tag any block of text with the following tags:

this tag goes at the end of the hidden text ~~~~>
this tag goes at the beginning of the hidden text ~~~~>
i read the books about 13 years ago. there were 2 islands. the first island is "lost world" which is the second book. that island is where they raise and grow the dinos. Jurassic park is the theme park where people get to see them.

on jurassic park there was a science facility too. i think the park actually may have done the work to clone the dinos and then sent the eggs/babies to lost world. it was at that facility they found out that the gene they turned off to reproduce got turned back on or something. . the park also had its own geothermal power plant.

the third movie wasn't part of the book series. i can't really remember the 2nd/3rd movie so well. which one turns into a godzilla film?
That was the second one. They go to the "grower" island to get the T-Rex buck. In the 3rd one they go to find the lost kid and deal with all the dinos on the Park island.... I think.

I thought it was pretty clear a lot of things changed between the book and movies, a lot. In J. Park and World the second island doesn't exist. Everything is controlled on the one island. Jurassic World ignores Movies #2 and #3 completely, they never happened. They acknowledge that Jurassic Park happened and that everything went to crap, but I don't really recall hearing how they got everything back under control. The throwbacks to Jurassic Park in Jurassic World are pretty cool.

That's not true, jurrassic world is a linear continuation. Isla Nublar is the park island and dinos have always been hatched there just as they are being in this film. Isla Sorna is the second island and the basis for the 3rd film - theyre doing those boat tours around the island. Second film is the one that gets all Godzilla as they try to take dinosaurs from Sorna back to the san diego park Hammond abandoned.

I don't really get why they would eliminate the second island in the new movie. i just remember the books being so good and enjoying them so much(i'm not a big reader). that when the movies stray far from the plot, i just get turned off. the idea of 3 i could have seen michael crichton writing about. but it wouldn't have made sense in the plot line of the books. i mean it could have been an alternate plot line to the first book. instead of NEWMAN breaking the park, an engineered dino does.

at the end of book 1 it is basically obvious that bringing dinosaurs back was a bad idea and having a theme park was an even worse idea. it isn't just a bad idea but it is accepted that no one should ever do this. so the whole premise of rebuilding the island for theme park isn't feasible. that's just me though. it was actually these 2 books that got me to read about 90% of michael crichton's work. which i enjoyed.

i might re-watch 1/2 now that i got a soundbar. i'll probably turn off 2 before the godzilla scene. i might consider J World when it becomes Pirate able.

What I read that was a quote from a director or producer or something is that in JP1, Isla Nublar is the only island. [It isn't explicitly said though...just insinuated. I mean, why test and hatch on one island to instantly move them?] And then Sorna is created for #2 and #3. IN JW, they are back to the idea of only one island.

I actually thought #3 was better than #2... if you are putting in time to watch #2 at least, you have to give #3 a chance, haha.

Jurassic World - It's ok entertainment-wise, but every character is unlikeable except for Chris Pratt. Well, one other character was kind of likeable, but he got killed quickly.

If you don't know how the final fight will end within the first 30 or so minutes of the movie, you probably don't watch enough movies. Maybe that's a good thing.

Kumiko The Treasure Hunter - A shy Japanese woman finds a VHS copy of Fargo and thinks the digging up a suitcase of cash out of the snow part is real and travels to America to do it to make her dreams come true. Slow but interesting, somewhat funny in an understated, quirky, sad way. Does a good job of combining depression and hope.

Inside Out - Some complicated memory and emotion and thinking process theories going on in this movie, dumbed down and cutesied up, but it's still interesting in that regard and is entertaining. Heck, it might be worth seeing just for the emo scene during the final credits.

"What are we mad about?"
"I'unno. Whatever Troy's mad about."
"What's Troy mad about?"
"I'unno."
and
"Do you think they can tell we're a total fraud?"
"Of course not! We're wearing eye shadow!"
laugh out loud

Ted 2 - Good if you're a fan of SM. Improv scene had me dying. Don't expect much story wise, but alot of great cameos and plenty of scenes with nods to other flicks. Especially enjoyed a scene that was a nod to Jurassic Park.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl - Very good indie flick that's getting a bigger release. Great acting by all parts and espeically enjoyed the representation of high school. Main characters have an interesting releationship with very different personalities and upbringings, but they work very well together. Gets real sad at the end, but has an ending that (imo) represents what they were trying to convey throughout the movie.

Also, I love screening season! nod

What about Jake Johnson's character? He basically held that movie together. The kids' acting was the worst. I burst out laughing when the little one started crying about his parents. Props to the girl though for running through the jungle in a pair of heels #downasschick
I agree, Jake's character was pretty funny. Won't lie I went on eBay to see if they were really selling shirts for $150, and they had a ton on there that looked just like his for the typical $15-$25...no idea how you'd tell it was 'original' though.
Disagree about the kids, they were better than the 1st (Park) set. Doesn't mean they were GOOD...but they were most assuredly not the worst.

Saw Suicide Kings for the first time in 15 years. I remember loving it when I first saw it... sad to say that it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered.

Haha yeah Ira played by the dude from Big Bang Theory. He has not aged at all in the past couple decades apparently.
