Earning points for trip

Hey all,

I am trying to find out how this works and wanted to pick your brains.

I want to take a trip to Poland so me, my wife and kid can go see her parents. I know that LOT airlines is a member of the Star alliance. I want to be able to get enough points/miles to travel there for free and wanted to know how I can find out which cards give points towards star alliance. Mainly looking for bonus points for signing up for the CC etc.

Good luck! ..Also, don't get a card with an annual fee unless you plan to use it for the rest of your life. Otherwise, it's just not worth it.

How can you find out if those points can be applied to the airline I want to use? For example, I created and account on Polish LOT and it gives me an option to add a card etc. Oh, it does say they are a member of Star Alliance...how do I know that the card/rewards are part of that as well? A Co-worker said he and his family of 4 flew to Hawaii for free doing this...Kind of like app-o-rama but instead of moving $$ around for interest and 0% BT's, just doing it for points/miles etc.

I already started with the 30k points for spending $500 over 3 months.

I figure it would take me about 300-400k points/miles to get enough for the trip.

Right I know..I fly to hawaii for free annually. So your strategy is to apply for a bunch of credit cards?

I have excellent credit and am not buying a house till late this year , next year the earliest. Unless there is something else I am missing. Would be flying from Newark Airport to Warsaw. new credit CAN affect your home purchase rate this year/next year, so think about it so more.
if you create a new account, it'll negatively affect your score for ~2 years. if you get a LOT of credit all at once (over 4 new accounts), the impact on your score could be quite significant. it may require both you and your wife splitting the new accounts so that neither of your scores get affected too much. But also, if you're stretched on available credit to you vs your income, that could also influence how much money a bank is willing to lend to you.

I would think that this would be safe to do if you don't plan any new major purchases within 2 years. if you're thinking end of this year, or early next year, I'd rethink your plan.

A toned down option could be to pay for the kids, and get your two tickets for free, or some variation of that.

Thinking of getting my parents to sign up for the cards too since they already own a home etc. and just add their points to my LOT account.

doesn't matter if you cancel the card. The hard credit pull stays with you for 12 months.

Yeah, definitely would not recommend opening up cards just for a few $100s in airline points when you're talking about a house in the near future. That's probably the BIGGEST reason not to apply in fact.

Your wife could put down household income on some applications in order to get the cards, however it also depends on her previous credit history/score.
