This phone has been steadily dropping in price on amazon. It was $610-620 in the last few weeks.

Prices for phones are inflated due to carriers setting high prices and inflating the market price. Either you buy a subsidized phone or pay like crazy for an unlocked phone. It is how they partition the market and justify their ETF when you break contract.

iPhone 4s hardware breakdown cost: ~$200, unlocked retail price $649
iPad 2 hardware breakdown cost: ~$300, 3g version retail price $629 ($529 now since iPad 3 is out)

Why is the 3G tablet CHEAPER?!? Screens and batteries are the most expensive parts, and both are much bigger on tablets. Design, development, manufacture, and shipping costs are similar between phones and tablets (often co-developed software and design). High costs of phones are very artificial.
