Please, no requests for app coupons or app coupon trades here. Post your requests or trade offers in the
Staples Coupon Thread
.

1. What's the Staples app?
This is an app from Staples that provides access to your Staples account, as well as Staples rewards account, and provides some useful tools.
You can read more about it here: Linky [staples.com]

2. How can I get it?
Android version is here: Linky [google.com]
iOS version is here: Linky [apple.com]
Any android phone or iPhone will work. In addition, you can install it on iPod Touch, iPad, Android Tablets, or HP TP running Android.

3. What's "check-in"?
When you are in a Staples store, you can click on the "Check in" button, and once your location is determined by the app, you'll be presented with a confirmation, and a coupon will be issued. The coupons state that they expire in 24-48 hours after they are issued, but in reality they can be used until the "real expiration date" (see WiKi for details). Please note that you do NOT need to sign into your Staples and/or Staples rewards account to receive the check in coupons. Coupons are generated once per device every 24 hours if you check in every 24 hours once the previous coupon has expired. The store makes no difference to the process. Multiple store check-ins in the same 24 hours does not get you any more coupons. You get the same one with the same 16 digit code. Since the device number is stored at a Staples server and coupons are per device, multiple devices will give you unique coupons per device.

4. Do I have to be physically in the store to check in?
Luckily, the answer is no. You can "spoof" your location by using certain apps that trick your phone to report specific coordinates. Depending on the app, you can either enter the coordinates of a Staples store or find it on a map and use that to create check in coupons from home/work.
For Android, Fake GPS [google.com] works great, along with few other examples (e.g., Location Spoofer, etc). For iOS devices, please see the WiKi (you need to jail break your iOS device).

5. Can I keep the coupons beyond the 24-48 hour expiration time frame?
Yes. If you take a screen shot of the coupon, you can keep it and use it later. On some Android phones, as well as iOS devices, pressing down power and home (or power and volume down) buttons simultaneously takes a screen shot. For devices that don't have this "built in", there are 3rd party apps.

6. Are the coupons random?
As of now, they seem to follow a certain sequence as outlined in the Wiki.

7. Can I stack these coupons with other app and/or paper coupons?
The % off coupons stack with $ off coupons. If you have 1 app coupon and 1 paper coupon (in either format), it will work "easier" compared to having 2 app coupons, since you are not supposed to have 2 of them at the same time. You can try printing out some of the app coupons to combine them.

8. Can I obtain any other coupons, in addition to the check in coupons, from the app?
The app generates coupons that can be used in store, online or over the phone. You can log into your Staples Rewards account from the app and access your Coupon Wallet and use whatever coupons you may have in there based on their T&Cs (e.g., in store only, online/phone only, etc). Those coupons have nothing to do with the app; they are under your Staples Rewards account and can be accessed from the web interface using a PC or directly from the mobile app.

20% off software will be a frenzy when it becomes the first coupon after reset! wave

Well right now there are better 20% off coupons available on ALL software until June. However, you have to wonder why they are doing this? Too many resets causing too many of the first coupons to be produced? Limiting their exposure? IDK. Just interesting.

ETA: Updated the wiki to reflect the fact that the old #3 is now the new #1.

I just used a 25 off 75 that we all acquired through the online ad banner and it printed out on the receipt with expiration date of today. I just used one the other day and it printed out 6/9. Have they changed expiration dates for anyone else?

What are the first 5 digits of the coupon code you used today? That would be a major bummer if they somehow isolated the ones we generated.

All of the recent $25 coupons from banners have a "built in" expiration date of 6/9, regardless of what's printed on the coupon.

I know and used one from this batch a couple days ago and it printed 6/9 on the receipt. This one printed expiration date:05/04/12.

I used 20% off software (starting with 4098) and $25 off $75 (starting with 2219) coupons today (2 of each). Expiration date on receipt shows 06/02 and 06/09 respectively.

There were two batches of banner ad coupons. The coupon you used was from the second batch. I don't remember the exact expiration but I guess it was 5/4 based on your transaction. The first batch starts in 8303 and has the 6/9 expiration date. I have a bunch from the first batch so I didn't bother printing more than one from the second batch because of the earlier expiration date.

On a related side note, I somehow brought two used coupons to Staples earlier today. I was lucky I had a clueless cashier who didn't question me at all after both rang up as used. Based on stories I've seen posted here, I almost panicked after the second one and thought they were going to interrogate me and accuse me of coupon fraud. I just said I lost track of my coupons, so she just said come back with another one and do a return/rebuy. lol.

Oh, you mean 5/4/12 showed up on the receipt? I thought you were talking about the exp. date on the coupon itself.

Something to note...

I started my wife's old Droid on the app a few weeks ago and held her phone at #8 until I had a chance to root her phone to take screenshots. I finally got around to rooting it last night and went to get my software coupon, but ended up with a 10 off 75. I guess the shifting of the cycle also caused her phone to shift to #10 instead of #9? Maybe that's what caused some people to skip in the past?

I used about 5 23804 the past couple weeks and they all printed 6/9 on the receipt. Today was the first time and only time it printed 05/04/12.

yes on the receipt. On the printed paper it was like 4/27, but they always said 06/09 on the receipt. However today it said 05/04/12. I just don't want to try stacking coupons and then run into problem, because it comes up expired lol. I did notice today would be 14 days since the coupon was generated, but idk if that is pure coincidence.

Ah, ok. So the expiration was supposed to be 4/27. The cashier still scanned your coupon even tho it says 4/27?

Maybe they had a lot of people using these coupons after 4/27 and a bunch of store managers brought up the issue with corporate? This might be their fix. If you're brave, I would say to keep trying until it comes up invalid. Just make sure you have a 6/9 coupon as backup.

I might try them out on staples website to see if it says it is expired or something. lol haha I always feel a little brave walking into Staples. I have gotten questioned why I bought stuff on clearance and what I'm doing with it. I'm like honestly why would I not buy a printer 90% off, use it, and then throw it away when the ink is gone. I must be hurting their personal reselling business or something haha

Yeah, checking online is the best idea actually. I'm pretty lucky that the 3 or 4 stores that I go to are pretty cool about clearance stuff (if I can find it) and coupon use. There's one cashier who will read the fine print on coupons, but will still scan the coupon anyway when I ask her to try. lol

I checked the coupons that showed 4/27 expiration online, and it says that the coupon is only valid in store. For the ones that I used, it shows "already redeemed". I don't know whether it's supposed to show "expired' for in store coupons or not, though.
