These are usually targeted towards inactive/dormant accounts. YMMV on getting it applied to an account that didn't get a mailing, worth a call though.


I did this in Q4 last year, one of my cards (Discover Gas) got $1000x3mo ($150 net) offer, and another (Discover Platinum) got $500x3mo ($75 net) offer like the OP

yeah my dad got this on his card since he barely used it for a period of time

didn't bother calling though, takes time...

I see it as free money. I spend at least $500/month anyway, I just need to switch my spending habit a bit until I spend $500/mn. Then go back to my regular card for the rest of the month.

Yup. They've been sending these for quite a while and it is different for different people. I got one that asks me to spend $3000 per month for 8 months to get $500. I think they try to get you to spend a lot more than you normally do in the hopes that you will make Discover your primary card. If only they knew how SDers think!

I called and was told I had to spend $3000 a month for 6 or 8 months to get a $500 award. I asked and was told this was the only offer that applied to me. So, yes, it is targeted.

I got this very same offer. The problem is, although I spend that kind of money, the vendors that I use don't accept Discover. And if I come up short of $3k in any of the 6 months, then I lose the whole $500. So no thanks.

I got a targeted offer that said spend $3000 for 12 months straight and get $500.. I stopped using the card a while back in favor of Chase Freedom. Thing is I never charged more than $1,000/month to begin with.

Choose 6 months, not 8.

Now does Chase Freedom have this same hot line for their CashBack promotions?

They didnt have any for me under discover where i have to spend X amount of money but the lady on the phone found another promotion where i get an extra 2% cashback on one day of the month.

I had called earlier today to check it out on both my wife and my accounts so it's funny I see this thread this evening. It definately is targetted, they can't just make one up so she said to check your statement each month. The rep also confirmed that this if usually targetted for low balance account only.

Really it's not a bad deal if you're going to make the spend, depending on the categories you're going to spend in. If it's something you only have a 1% or 1 point per $ spend, the Discover deal is about 4 or 5% per $ which is really good. I have a big deck expense coming up that would be perfect for this.

Discover must really be mixing it up on these deals. Yesterday I received a similar offer, but had to spend $1500 a month for six months to get $250. That was a little too rich for my blood, I'll continue to use other rebate cards instead.

What this deal should be is "Call discover, find out what bonus they offer".
