Hundreds of U.S. Marines were suddenly told Wednesday to leave and return unarmed to a venue where Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta was scheduled to speak, according to reports — an unusual move that illustrates the military’s heightened security concerns.
Typically, American forces in Afghanistan have kept hold of their weapons when Panetta addressed them.
“Allegedly, their commanding general is the one that made that decision,” Lt. Col. Cowan said. “I’ve looked at his record, he has a lot of time in combat, a lot of time in Iraq, time in Afghanistan, he himself knows that our men and women walking around over there with their weapons do not just put them down somewhere, asking them to leave their weapons at the front door is like asking them to leave their right arm at the front door.”
U.S. officials told Marines to leave a tent and disarm themselves before re-entering for a meeting with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. NBC's Atia Abawi and Jim Miklaszewski report.

"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."
- Arthur Schopenhauer
“It is natural for man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth… For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.”
- Patrick Henry
Heard just now on NPR, that as soon as Panetta left, the Afghan president said their troops are ready to take over security ops.

I'm not exactly sure what I just ordered, but I think I'm pretty pleased about it if it's what it might be, but then again, I have no idea exactly what it is... but that's the nature of slickdeals.
Thanks OP! I think.
On Wednesday, Panetta received a security scare after an Afghan man drove a stolen pickup truck onto the tarmac where Panetta’s plane was about to land, then emerged from the vehicle in flames. The man later died from the burns. A U.S. commander said he believed the incident was unrelated to Panetta’s visit and that the man may have been trying to run the truck into a group of U.S. marines
