Problem with E420 wireless connections.
I am having trouble with a E420 laptop's wireless connection in my home network. E420 is running window 7 32bit. My wireless router is Asus RT N56u. The odd thing was, when I tried to connect E420 to RT_N56U, it will connect for a second (working) and then it can't browse any website. I've tried to use Static ip for this laptop but the problem remains. Today, I brought this laptop to the office, it's been working since 11 am. I am really confuse, what did I do wrong? |

Couple of things to try first that are easy.
Make sure the router has the most up to date firmware. Make sure the router is on a the most empty channel, clear of interference. http://www.metageek.ne Make sure the computer has the most up to date drivers for the wifi card. If this is an intel card, get them from Intel's website, not dells. Vague questions receive vague answers . . . . . .

Bought a refurb e420 at newegg recently and have the same issue. NIC is Intel 1000 link bgn - wifi works at 1 to 6mbps speed when laptop is in same room as router. Doesnt connect to wifi when its in a different room. Tried reinstalling drivers, updated drivers from lenovo, intel -no fix yet.

Probably nothing you did. If it works at your office, you can (for the most part) rule out the hardware and software on the laptop. It's possible there might be something wrong with the 5Ghz band on either your router or laptop (since I'm assuming that's how its connecting), you can try to connect the laptop to another 5Ghz access point (a/n) or try connecting another device capable of using the 5Ghz band to your router....you should be able to rule out one or the other. Until you figure that out, you can try connecting to the 2.4Ghz side of the router (N will still work on that band); you'll need to set two different SSID's for the 5 and 2.4Ghz sides, you can check your router docs for how to do that. However, if you are connecting via 2.4Ghz; I've seen quite a few issues where there's interference involved (mostly from 2.4Ghz cordless phones, most specifically Panasonic and Plantronics). If you have any of those devices, unplug the bases and remove the batteries from the handsets and try again. If that turns out to be the cause, sometimes you can change the channel on your router, but more often than not you'll need to replace your phones with a DECT version. Another far less likely possibility is that the different chip manufacturers end up being incompatible; I've ran into quite a few of those in my job; mostly Realtek wlan adapters connecting to Netgear routers; but the same premise could apply. In Beer there is Freedom, In Water there is Bacteria. ![]() |
