Which bloatware to remove from new laptop?

dvcbwvfans 476 32 March 21, 2012 at 07:02 PM
Got a new Dell 14r and realized they loaded this bad boy full of more software than I expected. Can anyone please lend their opinion on which of the below to remove or keep?

Dell DataSafe
Dell Digital Delivery
Dell Music Stage
Dell Photo Stage
Dell Stage
Dell Video Stage
PlayReady PC Runtime

Backup the OEM activation key...
http://directedge.us/content/abr-...nd-restore

Then re-install windows 7.

Restore the activation key.

Done..no more bloat.

Go to vendor site to download any needed drivers or programs.

Do a system image to revert back to if needed ever.

Ahhh beat me to it. I second this. Easy to use and is pre-programmed with 50 or so default pre-installed software and bundles that come with OEM laptops so it should it up on at least a few that you don't want if not all of them and then some.

If you'd like to post screenshots of everything that is selected in the start up of msconfig, we could tell you what to deselect and that would be half the battle.
After that, we can do something similar with "Services".
Except for an occasional persistent process that cannot be stopped by msconfig and Services, no uninstalling is required. You simply stop those unnecessary processes from starting up.
When that is done, you clean up the disk and then defrag and the job is done.

Those are only from Dell. You have more bloatware than that and not necessarily Dell-related software.

+1. Full wipe and clean install is the best.

You can also just use the serial on the Windows sticker on the bottom of the laptop to activate instead of backing up the certificate and SLIC key. You will probably have to call an automated 1-800 MS line but it's easy any only takes a couple minutes.
