Perhaps we should look at the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [un.org] as well...
The polls were not skewed, biased, oversampled or wrong. I was. There was no wave, no landslide, I was wrong about that too. Nate Silver is the gold standard of polling analysis.

There is also the Cairo Declaration of Human Rights [wikipedia.org] put forth by the OIC and its member nation states, which came about because Muslims reject some of the language in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (and criticize the document as a codificaiton of Judeo-Christian values and philosophy).

The Universal Declaration of Rights starts getting objectionable round about Article 22 through Article 26, IMO.
The Cairo Declaration of Islamic Shariah Supremacy, well...

The BOR is a fine starting point and reflects what society was capable of providing and interested in at the time of its authoring. I imagine that we are working toward adding health care to that list. I think we will also formally or informally, have to address the right to environmental resources as the population grows. TIP: To avoid the stigma of literacy, listen to audio books. |

I object to positive rights being guaranteed or provided by government in general. These rights are impinging upon other peoples rights....confiscation of private property to provide healthcare and education, etc. Whilst we can can certainly decide to do such things, they shouldnt be given the status of rights guaranteed by governments. This debases the sanctity and meaning of rights. Article 22 through 26 are the codification of the welfare state as human rights. Article 22 demands national effort in support of individual self actualization and social security wealth redistribution. Article 23 grants the right to wealth redistribution as well as given special consideration to workers unions. Article 24 undermines autonomy and the ability to make contracts by the individual. Artcile 25 is partcilarly disturbing, being a catch all, enumerating socialism as human rights. Wealth redistribution via state power. Article 26 declares that "Education shall be free." Of course somebody has to pay for it. This is reminiscent of Obama's declaration that contraceptive coverage shall be free of cost to everybody....which is of course an impossibility unless you are talking about keeping your legs shut and your zipper zipped.

The difference between government fielding an army of soldiers and an army of doctors is, at best, a difference of degree. There is no fundamental distinction. The same government that consumes resources to protect a freedom of religion may consume resources to provide education. |

Freedom is something one has intrinsically that is taken by governments or the powerful. While people may collectively defend freedom, it is the defense of the right that is expensive not the right. Healthcare is not something one has intrinsically. They can work to purchase it like every other commodity. But as soon as you say it is a right, then the government needs to provide it. By providing it, they do not defend an intrinsic right, but to rob from others to give it to you. Of course now they have trampled on freedom. |
