It actually goes back much farther to the Jewish tradition, where God and the Individual Soul become the primary entities in the covenant. Thus we have individual God given rights, right back to the Pre-Christian Jewish tradition. The Judeo-Christian foundation of our individual God given rights.
Whether Christendom or Judaist Cultures failed to implement these in governance in the places and times does not disprove the philosophical construct within those religious theological traditions.
Yes, it does. If such ideals were as integral to those traditions as you claim they would have implemented them a long time ago. Instead you have oppressive authoritarian states and/or theocracies that hate religious freedom, democracy and equality, condoning slavery and oppression of women and minorities.
Communist secular nations have been thoroughly oppressive and totalitarian, themselves. In those places the Christian Churches provided a counter philosophical construct of individual God given rights in which are being infringed upon. The Catholic Church was instrumental in opposition to Secular Communism in Eastern Europe...even though the Communists tried to put Christianity in a straight jacket.
Communists tried to put secular freethinkers in a straight jacket as well. No one is saying there aren't more moderate and liberal Christians who uphold secular & humanist ideals like those our nation is founded upon. Christians who you and your ilk refer to as "weak" or "fake" Christians, or apostates.
A fact that seems to be at odds with the abolitionist movement of the pre-civil war era... and the Christian leaders involved in the civil rights movement of the 1960s.
There were more Christians that were pro slavery than con. Christians were responsible for the institution to begin with, citing Biblical principles. And they were correct - The Bible does indeed condone slavery, as does its primitive tribal totem god.
True, some Christians opposed slavery. Again, no one is saying there aren't more moderate and liberal Christians who uphold secular & humanist ideals like those our nation is founded upon. Many of our Founding Fathers were of this variety. Except the principle architects of our government, laws and Constitution of course, who were Deists.
