Took advantage of this $30 ZTE Score deal a week or two ago. It was *really* useful at the time, but within a couple months it was going to be relegated to the 'spare android device sitting in a drawer' role.
I activated it for this, but I don't even think that was necessary. What makes it really sad? I couldn't even get the browser open before the rep (in the VA store) was done.
They were out of most phones, so they were going to make up for me having to come back in to pick it up later with a $10 GC. When I mentioned I was interested in the Lumia 710, they said they actually still had a few. So I missed out on a GC, but got the phone without a separate trip.
They couldn't activate it on T-Mobile's contract-free plan ("Value" instead of "Classic"), so they gave it to me after all the appropriate signing and pointed me to the T-Mobile store. I got the extended coverage (for $31? that's 2-3 months on some of those plans) and went along my way to T-Mobile. Activated it with the Micro SIM, unlimited everything for $50/month? I may have a longer-term phone than I thought.
All told, this is an excellent promo for WP7. It's fun, it shows off some of what WP7 is good at, and it gets a WP7 device in people's hands (including mine). I can't imagine how much it's costing them, but if they push out even just 100 devices for each of the 17 stores? The word of mouth will do the rest.
Microsoft Store Challenge: free laptop and/or phone if you win
Sorry the details are a little fuzzy:
Passed by my local Microsoft store: South Coast Plaza in Orange County
They are running a challenge where if your phone can be faster than their phone running microsoft , that they will give you a free Samsung laptop. If your phone is not faster than their phone, you get their phone for Free if you trade in your phone ( maybe strings attached), and if you don't trade in your phone, you can still get a phone for free with 2 year contract.
The most important thing is to beat their challenge and get the samsung laptop. The free trade up may be worthwhile depending if there are strings attached such as signing a phone contract, but the rep I spoke to didn't mention it.
The line was too long for me, so I didn't wait, but speaking to the rep, i asked if I could overclock my phone etc, and he said that is ok. I'm sure if the right people figure out the right phone, it may be something that can be beat. The rep I spoke to said 1 person had won today saying it was maybe a galaxy s?
Not sure how hot of a deal, but all you need to do is ask for the free challenge. He said it is running until the 29th.

There were lots of el-cheapo Androids and other smartphones that made FP. To be honest, they for the most part were not that good even then. So a straight up trade for something new should be a no-brainer.
Repped! Picked up a Samsung Focus S here in Fashion Valley Mall, San Diego. I had an old Blackberry Pearl Flip 8220 that I kept as a back up phone. You can choose any phone regardless your carrier. I have T-Mobile and I asked for the Samsung Focus S because it has almost all the same specs as Samsung Galaxy II except it is a single core and does not have a microSD slot, and no HDMI and DNLA.
