If you OBJECT to the back-served issues when they arrive, simply call up customer service and say "YO yo yo, I BOUGHT THESE on the newsstand already. WOuld you please credit my account for these OLD issues you just sent me to make my new subscrioption run out faster?" Of course, be more polite, but that's basically the vgist of how you need to ask. BE FIRM WITH THEM. Make sure you don't take no for an asnwer and tell them your SUbscription should start with NOT THE CURRENT ISSUE ON NEWSSTANDS CUZ YA GOT THAT already. You want it to start with the NEXT issue that is being mailed. You could earn back 2 to 4 issues that way.
