THIS IS NOT A CONTEST

There is already a post on the contest aspect of this deal in the Contest section of SD, but in all honesty, the contest is the part of the deal that most SDers aren't going to care about. So, ignore the contest part. Pretend it doesn't exist.

Instead, focus on the fact that you can take any cheap, crappy smartphone you can get your hands on and swap it for your choice of almost any new Windows Phone (sole exception being the Nokia Lumia 800) get a $25 Gift Card at no cost.

NO CONTRACT IS REQUIRED - LIMIT ONE SWAP PER PERSON - NO PAYMENT REQUIRED

How to get the deal:

1) Get the cheapest a smartphone you can find (must be a smartphone, no feature phones).
2) Get it activated somehow (although not every store checks, some do, so you'll want to make sure it has phone and data on it when you go into the store).
3) Go to your local B&M Microsoft Store and tell them you want to take the "Windows Phone Challenge."
4) Lose the contest.
5) Fill out recycling paperwork.
6) Give them your crappy, old smartphone (make sure you format it beforehand as you don't get to keep your old phone).

7) Walk away with a $25 Gift Card brand new Windows Phone with no contract attached.

Again, NO CONTRACT IS REQUIRED, however you are limited to one swap per person. They will take down your ID information.

The smartphone you bring in can be on any carrier, but it cannot be prepaid MVNO. so if you don't have one, you can always buy a cheap Cricket, PagePlus or Virgin Mobile Android.

Quote from Updated Official Rules :
Microsoft Windows Phones and non-smartphones are excluded from this Challenge. Non-smartphones include, but are not limited to Feature Phones, Flip phones, "dumb-phones," "go-phones," pre-paid phones, or other pay as you go phones. Phones must be activated with a cellular carrier. Your smartphone must be using the original, unmodified operating system that came standard on your smartphone.

NOTE - Cheap Data Activation
If you are using an unlocked GSM device, T-Mobile Prepaid offers a $2/day unlimited everything plan.

Phones available for selection:
ATT: HTC Titan, Samsung Focus Flash, Samsung Focus S
T-Mobile: HTC Radar, Nokia 710
Verizon: HTC Trophy

HTC Titan (MSRP $549):

SANTA CLARA STORE REPORT:

1) Did original challenge on 3/25.
2) Got first notification (raincheck) email on 3/29.
3) Got pickup email today - 4/3.

Picked up HTC Titan. Box and phone were new (whoever claimed that these were refurbs was either lying or talking out their ass), though the seal was broken. The store employee said they were all like that. Basically it looked like when you buy a cell phone at a cell store and they open the box at the time of purchase for activation (though they didn't make us activate there).

I'm guessing that this is in part to help curb the resellers. No one can sell this as "New in Box" since the seal has been broken. laugh out loud

Store associate was REALLY nice and the trade in part was painless. They just asked what phone it was and collected it.

Had the choice of two bonus offers (ended up buying one because it IS a stupid slick deal).

Offer #1: 2 year MS warranty + case + 1 year Zune Pass = $50
Offer #2: 2 year MS warranty + case + $100 in MS Points = $50

Got in and out rather quick and VERY pleased with the experience.

SANTA CLARA VALLEY FAIR store rocks. Big Grin

For whiners for long lines, I have nothing to say, as we know, first come first serve, people are willing to sacrifice sleep, time for the free phone.
But for guys doing repeat challenges, that's against the rule, although not all stores check that, but still it is against rule, and those @$3 actually took away others' chance.
For the fvckers to go without pickup emails, those are just pure aholes, it is exactly the same as cut in the line, steal others' spot... no life suckers.
Terms doesn't prohibit people from doing the contest twice(unless you won). It only prohibits people from winning the laptops twice. Point out where in the terms where it says otherwise.

Today, I was the 93rd person in line. Only 1 laptop was won. Most people didn't take the challenge and they just got their information entered and they walked away.

I went there after confirmation[with a second qualifying phone]. This is the email response from Microsoft Store Rep: [Note I have removed the names sorry]

Dear Mr. XXXXXXXXXX,

Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Store to discuss your concerns. We have looked into the situation that you described in your email and have determined that if you were entering the second contest with a different smartphone than the one you entered with the first week and (i) the second smartphone is currently activated with a cellular carrier, (ii) it is registered to you, and (iii) it has not been used by anyone else in this week's contest, then you are able to participate in this week's "Smoked by Windows Phone" Challenge.

The manager at the Microsoft Store at the Oakbrook Shopping Mall has been advised of the situation that you encountered and he is standing by to make sure that you have no further issues entering the contest with a second qualifying phone.

Thank you,
XXXXXXXXXXX

So they checked over the phone if they sent the email? I called up yesterday to see about the second email and some bitch was saying she can't check ANYTHING and for me to come in.....if I go, I'm leaving with a phone
no, my friend called and they said the exact same thing (which makes sense bc they can't have 10000 people calling and making them check status lol). I asked a guy while I was at the store picking up my phone and he looked it up for me since we did the challenge 3/24 at the same exact time for the same phone.

Was this before 10am that they let you enter your info and walk away? BTW: since most MS stores open at 10am and the mall opens at 10am, where are people waiting in line if they show up at 6am-7am or whatever? Are the mall doors usually open that early?

Here's a detailed update on how my pickup went down:

Arrived at the Santa Clara Valley Fair store around 5 PM yesterday (April 4th) after receiving the pickup email at 4 PM. The store was pretty active, but there weren't any lines, neither at the challenge booths nor at the front desk.

I approached the front desk and told them "I'm here to pick up my phone from the Windows Phone Challenge." The guy asked me what my name was, which he looked up in his computer to make sure I actually took the challenge. He then asked which phone I asked for, and I told him I requested the HTC Titan (that he asked at all makes me think that you can pick up anything you want, not necessarily the phone you told them you wanted after the challenge -- but only as long as there is stock of what you want?).

He went into the back to get the phone and another service rep gave me a recycle form to initial and sign, which I finished in about a minute. The other rep returned with an unopened, new HTC Titan box and scanned everything in. There were two reps helping me out at this point.

At this point they let me know of the 2-yr warranty, cover, and 1-yr zune pass for $50 promotion. Seeing as how I got that much in gift cards from the second round of challenges I took the offer. The rep then asked for my ID (driver's license) and confirmed that I was indeed the guy I said I was. I thought that at this point I would be able to walk out of the store with my old phone, but then he asked if for the phone I was trading in. I gave him my LG Optimus V (just phone + battery, no microSD card or cords) as I shed a single tear. (I loved everything about the phone except for the crippling 125MB onboard storage.)

He didn't confirm whether that was the phone I committed to trading in (even though it was), whether it turned on (even though it was on), or whether it was rooted, etc.; all he did was take the phone, wrap it with my signed form, and place it in a cupboard behind the front desk. (I think the battery is probably dead by now.)

After that, we went through a standard checkout process. I asked whether I could swap out the 1-yr zune pass sub with a $100 MS Point card, and he said no. I also noticed that the case I was given was an Incipio "Feather" cover, which looked like those cheap $2 plastic snap on covers you can get on eBay or Amazon, so I asked if I could get the Incipio "Silicrylic" cover instead (hybrid silicone+polycarb cover), which he cheerfully swapped for.

We then finished the transaction and printed the receipt. The rep gave me a nice looking bag with all the goodies inside. The whole process was very smooth and took about 7-10 minutes. Throughout this promotion, the customer service reps at the MS Store were extremely nice, helpful, patient, and cheerful every time I called and visited the store, even with what I am sure was (is) a hellish week and half for them.

All in all I walked out of the store around with a new HTC Titan, cover, 2-yr warranty, 1-yr zune pass, and a pretty sweet vinyl bag with $0 out of pocket. Very slick deal.

PS So far, this phone is a fast, smooth, and well-constructed beast. I may consider opening an AT&T line if I end up liking the WinPho system.
Thanks for the details. Did you take the pickup email printout with you?

Just came back from Oak Brook, IL for second challenge. Lost Frown but was very close. All the numbers were gone by 9:30 AM this morning and then the store employee then started giving away 25$ gift cards for the rest of the crowd.

did they check any ID's or anything or just gave away the Gift cards?

No, actually I managed to enter around 11:15 AM. The store was full so they stopped after around 80 people and the rest were waiting outside. For the second question, Oak Brook, IL doesn't have Mall Doors. The mall is pretty much wide spread and they are no physical doors that can stop any one from entering the mall before 10 AM.
I have heard some persons were there since last night and also some as early as 6 AM. I reached there around 9:32 AM and got number 93

I did, but neither of the reps asked for it. It may have shown up in their system that I received the pickup confirmation. YMMV, I guess.

I know those skill challenges are some what biased
but what was it? do they have an app pegged to the tiles that does what they want them to do?
