I think you have to install Linux to read it as these things run Linux and use a Linux filesystem like ext3. At least, I'm pretty sure I read that someplace (maybe earlier in this thread).

Some of these NAS drives format hard drives in their own proprietary (weird) way. I had a 500GB simple tech NAS that the enclosure died but the hard drive is ok (I'm 99% certain) but I have no way of recovering the data on the drive other than trying to by another simpetech and putting my drive in it, but those are hard to find, old and expensive so I have given up on my old files, music and movies that were on the 500GB simple tech.

So I bought one of these dlinks and two seagate 1.5TB and put them inside with RAID 1 and I still don't fell comfortable that my data is safe . One day it may simply stop working, who knows.

Yeah, that's part of the reason why I just decided to build a Windows file server. The disks will be NTFS formatted so anything can read them. With a Mini-ITX board, it should be possible to make one that's pretty small and uses little power.

Do I need to put 2 disks to get the NAS ready or 1 should be sufficient? What is use of putting 2 disks when you get only the storage of 1 disk?

Preventing data loss when a hard drive fails. When you have almost 1TB of data on your drive and you lose it all, it can be very upsetting!
2 disks means 1 drive fails, you're okay. The odds of both drives failing at exactly the same time are pretty low.

I own a DNS-320 (lower end model). I had some issues with one of my drives took it out and was able to access the files from Ubuntu (or any linux OS). The file system is ext3. Common throughout linux and very well supported. So even if your NAS dies your data will live on.
