Replacing my Comcast Cable HD Box

With the new release of the Xfinity App on the Xbox today, I see no reason to be paying $10/month for an HD Cable Box. I still want HD channels to my TV, but about a month ago I remember a FP deal for some cable box alternative that you can own, the only downfall being you can't use OnDemand. Since that problem is fixed by the xbox app, I definitely want to go down that route. However, I can't find that deal, and am looking for help on how to do this.

I know that you can get 1 cable card for free from Comcast so I'll need to do that no matter what device I choose. The only option I know of is TiVO, but that costs $15/month -- I am looking for something with no monthly subscription.

However, this requires an HTPC to be hooked up to your TV at all times...is there something like the SiliconDust HD Prime with HDMI out (and a remote)?

Only standalone box left that does cablecard is Tivo. There was Moxi, but that is discontinued.

Doesn't require an HTPC to be hooked up to your TV at all times, but it does require and HTPC to be hooked up to your cable at all times, and available to record any shows you have set to record, ie, can't be shut down, only hibernated.

Then you can set your Xbox up as a Media Center Extender and watch live TV through the Xbox over your network using the tuner card in the HTPC which can be located anywhere. I'm doing it right now, my HTPC is located in my basement (where it *is* connected all the time to a projector, but that only gets used a few times a week) and I'm pulling live TV and recordings up to my living room on an Xbox in HD, and the same to my bedroom on another Xbox. The Xbox can bring the PC out of hibernation when you request the tuner.

Come to think of it, you could probably use the Silicon Dust product, hook it straight to the router, and feed the XBox without the need for a PC. You wouldn't be able to record anything that way though, which is a big part of it for me.

My plan give me free standard box, it comes with SD onDemand service.

That won't work. No way for the Xbox to communicate with the Silicon Dust tuner without an HTPC. If you don't have an HTPC, then you may want to check out the forthcoming Ceton Q:

You can pay for lifetime on TiVo and have no monthly fee. 399 online if you use code plsr. TiVo premieres go for about 70 on amazon. Just need cable card. Works awesome.

how do you get the cable card?

I wanna get a tivo instead of getting raped by my cable provider (brighthouse) for "renting" the hd dvr box plus another fee for "hd dvr service" = 20month .
