Access netflix outside of USA
I tried searching but didn't find any relevant threads.I would like to access netflix when I am traveling for work outside the country. I read somewhere that VPN can be the answer. Not a tech person, so I thought I would ask the community for their experience. If VPN is the only answer, 1. Which company is good to access netflix? 2. Can I setup VPN at home? I have an ASUS RT-16N and can leave a desktop on though this will be done only after 2 weeks (out of country currently) Thanks in advance |

VPN would likely be, imo, the best answer. A web proxy may work, but I haven't had luck getting Netflix to do that (Maybe a SOCKS proxy, but I haven't had the need/want to do it so can't help you there )It's possible your asus may have built-in functionality, but it's doubtful since most consumer-end routers don't include it unless you put on a third-party firmware like DDWRT or Tomato. It shouldn't be too much of a headache to set up your desktop at home to receive a vpn connection (in windows, this is achieved through the add connection wizard in network connections); you'd need to forward the appropriate port(s) on your router and configure your laptop to connect; then as long as you have an internet connection and the country/ISP doesn't block vpn traffic you should be able to access everything as if you are on your home network. Thanks for the info. I did installed Tomato on the router though I might have to reinstall it. Been having disconnection issues lately.
Any idea if there is a write up for setting up the desktop for VPN Last edited by Avi; 03-29-2012 at 05:42 AM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

As far as the 'across the ocean' thing; netflix is usually pretty good about scaling quality down to match your connection. Latency will be the worst, but as long as you have the throughput you should be OK. |

I used VPN to access netflix from Taiwan. Video was good, no stream problems.
Only issue i had was it was a hit or miss. Sometimes, it just doesnt work... but a majority of the time, i just had to make sure i connect to VPN first before launching netflix... using VyprVPN, but i dont recommend it... |
