South Africa trip - how to on the cheap?

I've been to South Africa twice, and am going back for a third visit in July. South African Airways usually runs sales during the African summer. If you plan on going in the African winter, I would suggest keeping an eye on the US Airways mileage sales. The last two times I've gone I was able to save ~$500 by buying US Airways miles utilizing their 100% mileage bonus. Then you use them to book a South African Airways flight, since they are alliance partners. It is a bit tricky with two people because you have to find award ticket availability, but if you plan WAY in advance you can usually do it. My girlfriend and I went in June-July of last year, and we booked our plane tickets in November of 2010.
