I have some Patriot Pyro's and they come in at WEI 7.8 on SATA III. Most load times are cut to less than 1/10 to 1/15 of my old 7200 RPM SATA II. I've had about 2 blue screens in 60 days but no actual data loss (to my knowledge). The Pyro is pretty slow compared to most SSD. Look at your WEI scores - the lowest is probably your hard drive. Still, you can cite the performance benchmarks all day but you have to really see it to believe it. |

I'd avoid this drive. I recently purchased the 128G Petrol and it started having issues within a week. I saw all of the bad reviews after I purchased mine and was hoping that maybe the one I got would be OK. Unfortunately that was not the case. I ended up returning the drive and getting another brand.

I too have the 128GB version of this drive in my desktop. I don't know if it was the drive that caused it but nearly a month after using it as the OS drive I had a startup failure because of a corrupt driver. I tried to do several fixes but ended up having to do a fresh install of Windows. It's been working fine now for a couple weeks so we'll see if it happens again.
Just because to use this drive as a storage drive on a computer first simply to update the firmware before you install your OS onto it. The firmware claims to be "destructive" which means it will erase all data on it when you update the firmware. As for performance, it definitely seems faster than the 80GB spinning drive I was using as my OS drive before. Looking for deals on the following:

The Pyro SE uses synchronous memory and the Pyro used asynch. The Pyro SE was supposed to be a better drive, technically. The difference was small in the tests I just looked up. You probably wouldn't notice the performance difference unless you were told.
Back on topic - take the reviews on SSD drives with caution. Remember that most of the SSD drive problems related to the early firmware versions, not the hardware. The early firmware releases of many SSD were incredibly buggy. The recent releases fixed most of the problems but some are still out there. So differentiate between reviews that make no mention of updating to the latest firmware before using the SSD. Look for reviews indicating if they had problems after a recent firmware update. Do your diligence on product research before buying any SSD. |
