I have a 2-year old zino (3250e dual core, 2gb ram, ati 3200) that does pretty well even now as a htpc. How would this proliant compare with it if I found a suitable (hopefully cheap) video card.

Both CPUs have the same clock speed, but the N40L is 25% faster while using less power (15W TDP vs 22W), has double the L2 cache memory, uses DDR3 ram instead of DDR2. The K10 core is an upgrade over your K8. Likely not see a huge difference. While the 3250e is strong enough, the Zino would be hard to re-purpose to support much use as a server. The server oriented HP has a larger case (what doesn't?) to accommodate server features including more drives and a full height BR/DVD/CD drive. It does accept a low-profile, lower wattage video card. If you want to add more drives and want media storage/back-ups as well as HTPC usage, the HP will excel as a server and a add-in card should beat the Zino's built-in ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200 (4330 if upgraded) graphics, better supporting high bit-rate HD formats & 3D. It's just not as cute.

I was looking for memory on my new N40L systems. Most of the high quality 2x4GB (8GB) dual channel packs are around $40 or have rebates.
I tried a few existing Newegg codes until I got one to work on this G.Skill Value ram, perhaps the highest rated memory on their site. $32.29 for 8GB, free shipping, dual channel, no rebates. No, it's not ECC, but I don't think ECC is all that necessary for home servers. Especially when using very high quality memory like this. i guess its 4gb per slot.
do you think its better for me just stick the 16gb sticks and just use 8gb that it will be limited to? i bought the 16gb sticks a while ago for like $20 total. or should i put one 8gb and the other ecc 256gb? i am moving my whs2011 server, i had a total of 16gb in whs 2011 with these same sticks |
